Story
It was supposed to be a simple scouting mission. In and out. No fighting. No new quests. Just me, my hippocorn, Alice, and a few hired mercenaries. We were going to tiptoe into the Spiral, get the info we needed, and leave. You know, the Spiral? That tower-defense run that protects the hobgoblin capital from invaders? Easy, right? Nobody would even know we were there. Yeah, so about that....

Better than Stormlight #5! ...and thats not good.

GD, Matt! I like RPG's. I'm not a fan of tower defense. Aside from the slow, rambling build of the Goblin Riot there were a couple parts where I thought we are getting somewhere and I start to get intrigued. Short lived. I listened to about a 3rd and I just couldn't do it anymore. I returned it. I've only done that once before. With that said, Dungeon Carl Crawler is one of my favorite LitRPG series - if you have not explored those, it is a MUST! (in my best Arnold S voice) Do it! Do it NOW!. Ok, now I don't feel so bad for leaving Matt a negative review. Doesn't matter, doesn't seem like he's finishing up this series anyway. One more thing. Jeff Hays does such a incredible job on narration, he ruins everything else he doesn't narrate. GD, Jeff.

The Real Most Boring Book Ever
Reviewed: 01-06-25
I'm a little bummed. I sat on this review for a week thinking, but I'm disappointed with this latest installment in the series. As a longtime fan who has read all of the author's previous works, including multiple rereads of the Stormlight Archive, I struggled to connect with this book. While I admire Sanderson's prolific output and imaginative world-building, this felt like a chull. Unlike the satisfying conclusions of previous arcs like Mistborn, this book felt overstuffed with dull dialogue and unengaging subplots. The characterization of Kaladin, in particular, felt off, more like an annoying Jar Jar Binks tagging along. I was surprised to find so many positive reviews, as my experience was overwhelmingly negative. This book, for me, was a significant letdown and one of the worst I've read. I think it's more geared toward the small % of superfans that don't read Sanderson, they STUDY Sanderson. Perhaps its like when I first watch the Star Wars prequels. I "loved" them, until I spoke the words for my own Truth, the truth was I didn't like them at all but was too busy being a superfan to be able to admit to myself. Well, Truth is our own to decide and my Truth on this book is that this is one of the worst books I have ever read.

But there are rules: He cannot look inside the box. He cannot ask questions. He cannot tell anyone. They must leave immediately. He must leave all trackable devices behind. As these eccentric misfits hit the road, rumors spread on social media that the box is part of a carefully orchestrated terror attack intended to plunge the USA into civil war.

If you haven’t read the Lost War yet, make haste and do so. Book 2 was so good, I’m going to have to relisten to both again. I haven’t listened to The Lost War since it came out. I think I’d get more out of this amazing book if I relistened first but was too excited. The Bitter Crown did not disappoint. Amazing characters you grow to love, and some not. I think JLA does a great job bringing his story to life.

Not my fav JR book but kept my attention, good characters, and makes you think a bit. Maybe some religious overtones but certainly not preachy, it’s just a concept in a story. Folks need to know to not let things bother them so much. Don’t skip it like many suggest. I truly appreciate the extremes and polarization JR takes us through. And the book got me thinking - that’s when I know I like it.

A very interesting and fun journey of my childhood

I thoroughly enjoyed listening to Scott walk me down the intriguing history of Atari. His humor is a delight as we unpack what exactly went on behind the doors of the most influential company of...probably my life. I loved hearing Scott's perspective and insights about the industry and the possible causes for the whole thing going south. I remember demoing Yars' in a local grocery store (yep, even grocery stores were selling Atari games) and I had to buy it then. However, Raiders will always be one of my all-time fav's and set me up on a life of adventure and exploration. I played that game over a 100 times. And Scott, I accept your apology for never reaching the Ark. Scott does mention that many folks did like ET. I was one of them. As a matter of fact, I loved the game and so did all my friends. We played over and over again and I don't remember anyone ever saying they didn't like the game. As a matter of fact, I made a video and put it in my top 10 - just Google, "HippoBytes Top 10 Atari games". Not meaning to talk about "me", I only want to give a huge nod that it wasn't ET, it was the internet. The web does funny things, To sum up - I loved this book and all its entertainment, insights, and history.

Man. If I don't appreciate a book, I usually don't rate or review it so my personal bias wouldn't influence a decision for someone that may actually love it. BUT! This is awful relative to Brandon Sanderson books. I loved every single one of Mainframe's other projects. The production comes across as extremely amateur with such bad acting, I am actually shocked at the positive reviews. Are they fake? If you can get past the horrible acting filled with ear-piercing high-pitched dialogue, shrieks, and cringe-worthy fake laughing - it's just bad. The story unfolds slowly and you find yourself saying "I got it, I got it, please move on so I can be done with this one". It doesn't feel Sanderson at all. It left me thinking it's probable Sanderson slapped his name on the cover to promote this Mainframe project, a company he co-founded. Let's just bury this one and pretend it never happened. Although there's another Dark One already in the works.
