I’m glad I ignored the reviews
Reviewed: 12-21-23
I genuinely enjoyed this audiobook. I didn’t have high hopes based on the reviews, but it was refreshing as a story in itself. It focused more on the people than the zombies and wasn’t a constant preppers lesson book like other apoc audiobooks. I can see why some people would think that it was a slow story. It’s just not what is the norm in the zombie genre. Like I said, I was surprised I enjoyed it. I did speed the narrator up a little bit, and that really did help when listening. He’s definitely not the worst narrator I’ve heard though.

I’m not sure why there’s so many bad recent reviews. This is a solid trilogy with a great narrator. I’m so glad I didn’t see those reviews before I purchased because I would’ve missed out on a great story.

Story
Two months ago, billions of people were killed by a deadly germ. Days later, they rose up again in massive numbers. Since then, cities worldwide have become rat-infested, germ-filled hellholes, ruled by the living dead. A group of survivors are trapped in the rotting heart of the capital, hopelessly outnumbered. They've heard rumors of a safe haven to the north—a self-sufficient community where people can rebuild their devastated lives—but the decaying ruins of London are vast and sprawling, and they're going to need an army to get away from this place.

I was pleasantly surprised with my first experience with Moody’s writing. Great story, characters and the narration was spot on! Solid performance from both author and narrator. Now I need to go check both for my next listen!

Great book
Reviewed: 07-29-21
(Kind of contains spoilers) Since this was an included book in my audible membership I didn’t have high hopes about how good it would be… but I was very wrong. I enjoyed the character development and the way each character didn’t automatically have super human abilities for survival. The only thing that was tough for me was how Dee found Jack. Just seems to much of a “let’s get them together quickly moment”. Dee made all these great decisions that took her away from Jack then went to rescue him on guess… a little far fetched to me. Still a great title and I will be following the series now.

I was skeptical about a stand alone book and as I feared I was so totally invested that I wanted another book... I finished it in record time and found what I read in the reviews was wrong and that it’s actually book one in the series. YAY!! I’ll definitely be getting the rest of the series when it comes out!

My new favorite PA author
Reviewed: 08-24-18
I'm picky. Really, really picky about my post-apoc fiction. It's my favorite genre and I am just as apt to return a book as I am to love it. However, 100 books into the genre on audible, Courtney has quickly become one of my favorite fiction author with just two books. This only ever happened with the Adrian's undead diaries series in the past. I can't wait until book 3 comes out! As a matter of fact, I loved her books so much that this is the first time in the last four years I was compelled to seek out and join her facebook group. Excitedly I found that if you sign up for her newsletter you get a new series in your email every two weeks and episode 1, which includes zombie, was GREAT! You will not be disappointed with this book where the heroines aren't actually morons who needs a man to save them.

Great First Book of a series...
Reviewed: 08-13-18
Love this book! As I love the genre (and you can tell by my reading list I'm zooming through all there is on audible), I always am on the look out for books with strong female characters. I'm usually complete disappointed but Courtney has made a completely relatable character and a storyline that's hard to stop listening to! Each of her books combines a great story line, some real survival tips and a good amount zombie... If you can see my reviews, you can see I'm picky and easily disappointed... I can easily say... YES, PICK THIS ONE!

Story
As anarchy and civil war took grip across the globe, Britain was quarantined. The press was nationalized, and martial law, curfews, and rationing were implemented. It wasn't enough. An evacuation was planned. The inland towns and cities of the United Kingdom were to be evacuated to defensive enclaves being built around the coast and the Scottish Highlands and in the Irish Republic. For George Tull and the other residents of the Waverly-Price Retirement Home, walking to the coast is not an option.

Winter is here. The cold spreads over the land, shriveling and choking out all the plant life. Harsh. Unforgiving. The first winter without electricity will surely claim more human lives as well. The isolation may do more damage than the cold, however. Too much time alone drives people to unthinkable acts.
