what the fluff???
Reviewed: 06-28-25
I sort of review this title whilst reviewing #1, mainly due to the absolute disappointment of the narration. While I do like Fiona Shaw as an actor, she just flattened the experience of listening. For the first two, I listened quite non-stop; for this one I’ve stopped and gone back to Murderbot. I may return this title, if I’m able.
Added note: I was so eager to hear this book that I bought it for cash, as I’m out of credits at the moment. So now I know, cash purchases cannot be returned! Lesson learned. I confess I didn’t preview before purchase, I just ‘assumed’…..

aging with snark
Reviewed: 06-28-25
I thoroughly enjoyed this book- the story was plotted well, the characters were interesting - Bogdan! and especially Elizabeth; the narration was top-notch, with Lesley Manville doing the different characters extremely well.
Upon finishing, I immediately went on to book 2, and again thoroughly enjoyed it, for all the same reasons.
Currently I’m listening to the 3rd book, and I have to say that the change in narrators is disappointing. It just doesn’t have the same flavor as 1 & 2. While listening to The Thursday Murder Club, and knowing it was going to be a movie soon, I could easily see the characters in my mind’s eye (and I so look forward to Helen Mirren/Elizabeth!) I can’t see them with the narrator of Book 3- it’s Fiona Shaw, absolutely one of my favorite actors- but not for this series.
So it remains to be seen if I will move on to book 4, or just read it ‘analog.’

Just finished the most recent book in the series, so this is an overall review. Absolutely entertaining, believable worlds and excellent characters. Moves at a high pace but you never feel left behind. Love the science and found the augmentations fun to imagine. Wonderfully fully fleshed out female protagonists! Can’t wait for the next book!

Juliet Bianchi was once just another working drone, struggling to survive in a world where megacorporations reigned, information was power, and that power was worth killing for. Then she stumbled upon a kidnapping gone wrong and ended up with a stolen AI chip that took her from the bottom of the barrel to a top-tier realm of mercs, freelancers, and assorted unsavory folk.

Great follow-up to book 1. Very intricate but easy to follow, M.R. Carey is a genius at world and character building. Dami Olukoya is a fabulous narrator, easily differentiating between character and accents. I so thoroughly enjoyed Book 1, and Book 2 did not disappoint. Given the advent of AI in our current world, and our constant penchant for war mongering, it is a fascinating story on many levels. I would give it 8 stars I could. Get it, you won’t be disappointed.

Story
Riverside Close is a picture-perfect community. The six exclusive and attractive houses are tucked far away from the noise and grime of city life, allowing the residents to enjoy beautiful gardens, pleasant birdsong, and tranquility from behind the security of a locked gate. It is the perfect idyll, until the Kentworthy family arrives, with their four giant, gas-guzzling cars, gaggle of shrieking children, and plans for a garish swimming pool in the backyard. Obvious outsiders, the Kentworthys do not belong in Riverside Close, and quickly offend every last one of the neighbors.

“You like it darker? Fine, so do I,” writes Stephen King in the afterword to this magnificent new collection of twelve stories that delve into the darker part of life—both metaphorical and literal. King has, for half a century, been a master of the form, and these stories, about fate, mortality, luck, and the folds in reality where anything can happen, are as rich and riveting as his novels, both weighty in theme and a huge pleasure to digest.
