She grabs her passport and heads for the northern border before the police can discover what she's done. But when an unexpected snowstorm forces her off the road, Quinn must take refuge at the broken-down, isolated Baxter Motel. The handsome and kindly owner, Nick Baxter, is only too happy to offer her a cheap room for the night. Unfortunately, the Baxter Motel isn't the quiet safe haven it seemed to be.

Surprise Ending
Reviewed: 03-17-25
The majority of the time I am able to predict the ending. And although I got some of it right, there was a surprise twist that I did not see coming. I liked the narrator in this book, unsure why others had a problem with her. She did a great job she voices that matched each character. The storyline also keeps you interested from the start. It’s not my favorite McFadden book, but it’s up there.

Not the best

I’ve read all of Hendrix’s books & this is my least favorite. The premise was original but the plot became predictable. The story had a snail paced start. Also, I understand the choice of narrator, but she wasn’t good. Had to speed it up, plus it was just bad “acting”.

Story
Two little girls stand with their heads bowed in my living room. I’m told they’re my granddaughters. Daisy is nine, and Alice seven. Daisy is the spitting image of her mother. This is the first time I’ve met them since my daughter and I fell out after she married that waste of space, Vince. They’ve come to live with me because their mother — my daughter — was murdered. In her own home while they slept close by. I think Vince killed her. But the police can’t prove it. I’ve always known he was no good. He treated my daughter like dirt. I said he’d cheat on her — but she wouldn’t listen.

I had to stop around story 6. The author uses the same structure in every story. Plots are good but becomes predictable; same concepts & basic ending for them all.

I agree with most of the reviews. The story was okay. The writer is obviously not from the US and knows nothing about Georgia. Used British words for things like vacation (holiday) or college (University). The narrator has a horrible Southern accent that can give you a headache from cringing. This is the 3rd book I’ve listened to where the author obviously does not research the location where there story is set.

Story
Waverly Lyons has been caught in the middle of her parents’ divorce for as long as she can remember. This summer, the battle rages over who she’ll spend her vacation with, and when Waverly’s options are shot down, it’s bye-bye Fairbanks, Alaska, and hello Holden, Florida, to stay with her aunt. Coming from the tundra of the north, the beach culture isn’t exactly Waverly’s forte. The sun may just be her mortal enemy, and her vibe is decidedly not chill. To top it off? Her ability to swim is nonexistent.

Sweet story. Need to get past that the writer has probably never been to a FL beach bc the descriptors include cliffs, coves, and rocky beaches. Overall the narrator does a good job and the story holds your interest.

The plot is unique with some tense moments. You do have to get past so many mispronunciations. The worst being the pronunciation of library as “liberry”. The good news is that for book 2, someone had the narrator learn the correct pronunciation.

Story
Ghosts don't exist in our world of today. Life is too pragmatic, too consuming, too busy for past lives to linger on longer than their allotted time, or so Halcyon had believed, until she received a letter from a lawyer claiming that her mother, whom she had thought long dead, had actually been living in another part of the country since Halcyon's early childhood. She had only recently passed away, leaving Halcyon heir to an unexpected fortune and an estate on an isolated island in the middle of the Great Lakes.

Story
When Margaret and her husband Hal bought the large Victorian house on Hawthorn Street—for sale at a surprisingly reasonable price—they couldn’t believe they finally had a home of their own. Then they discovered the hauntings. Every September, the walls drip blood. The ghosts of former inhabitants appear, and all of them are terrified of something that lurks in the basement. Most people would flee. Margaret is not most people. Margaret is staying.

This book has a very unique plot. With most books, I tend to predict the ending and that results in a boring ending. This book had plenty of surprises. The ending had me wanting more. Perhaps a (pre)sequel? Those stating they did not like the daughter character, or husband, missed the main character development and the end would not make sense without them and the background on the family. The narrator nailed the voice of the main character and did a great job in making sure the daughter was annoying. The story line makes you doubt your own thoughts and predictions as the main character doubts herself. I will listen to this one again.

Story
Three years ago in a large Victorian house on the Jersey Shore in the town of Harbor Haven, fledgling private investigator Paul and his client, Maxie Malone, were murdered. Since then, recent divorcée and reluctant ghost whisperer Alison Kerby and her 10-year-old daughter, Melissa, have moved in and converted the place to a guesthouse, where Maxie and Paul are now checked in for an eternity and ready to solve any case that comes their way - or at least spook the guests (who love it). Alison’s got a lot on her plate at the moment, however, so when Paul discovers the 300-year-old ghost of a small boy in the house, he decides not to involve her in the case.

Skip this book. The narrator is awful. His interpretation of voices is not great. Especially Loretta who sounds like a 90 yr old smoker.
The story line is boring and very slow. It adds nothing to the series.
