About this listen

Sadie has a gift. And she'll do anything to keep from using it.

At 16, Sadie Young had a brush with death, and as a result she became more sensitive to the supernatural. Rather than embrace this gift, she spent years running from it, and from the darkness that once preyed upon her.

Now 25 and working as a librarian, Sadie is called upon by a desperate family friend to look into a strange series of events. A teenaged girl has entered a reputedly haunted house in town and has gone mad. Committed, the girl attempts suicide and claims to be terrorized at all hours by a horrific specter known as "Mother Maggot".

Despite having subdued her gift for the past nine years, Sadie wishes to assist the girl and reticently agrees to visit the site of the haunting. But upon entering the house on Beacon Hill, she discovers that Mother Maggot isn't merely a figment of a disturbed teen's imagination....

I'm not sure I want to finish the book with the main character being a librarian and the narrator keeps saying LIBARY & LIBARIAN. UGH

Library NOT libary... or LIBARIAN

I really wanted to like this, but I cannot even give it a proper rating because I cannot stand the narrator's voice enough to listen through the book. Another reviewer likened it to her reading to preschoolers, and I agree. Her voice acting is alright, but I'd rather go without and just hear the book read well. I would have liked to hear it read in a deeper, more soothing voice. Her timbre is just all wrong for this type of novel.

Annoying narrator

I'm not real sure how to say it but the book was great story was amazing the readers voice was even good but there's 1 thing the reader did while reading that really hits a nerve. I got through that and finish the book also ready for book 2.

very interesting

I genuinely loved this story. it was fun and I enjoyed the characters. I don't know that I'll listen to the sequels though because they're all red by the same narrator. she annoys me all the way to my very soul. she pronounces the word library like lieberry. over and over and over. And the main character and her only friends are librarians at the local public library. so the word comes up a lot. And it's like I'd get so into the story I'd forget about it and then that word would pop up and she would just make me scream and want to punch myself in the face

fantastic story; poor reader

LibRarian, LibRary!!!! Why the narrator drops the r is insufferable!! The story is decent but written without an editor. Many cliches are repeated ad nauseam, descriptive language is extremely juvenile and simply shallow character development. This book is too painful a listen to care how and what happens. St. James is a far more complex and engaging writer of paranormal.

The narrator and prose ruined any possibility

For a book set in a library and the main characters are librarians, please find a narrator who can pronounce both words. Annoying and distracting. Do not recommend!

Liberry

Great story, but the narrator was terrible. Almost didn't listen after the first few paragraphs, glad I pushed through it though, the story is really good.

not a fan of the narrator

This is one of the best original ghost stories I have heard in a long time . I started the book this morning and ended up listening to it until I want to bed which, was a mistake. Luckily I got to the end and my phone died. When I started my phone up again this morning I realise the story wasn't finished and the thrills had not ended . Just like the ghosts in this story this book will come back to you again and again

Great ghost story

You can tell this is going to be a series because things you think are going to wrap up don't because the story is not ending.
So it was a good foundation I may or may not follow up with the next.

Good foundation.

The overall story was decent, but it was a personal hell getting through it because the main character is a librarian working at a library and the narrator continuously pronounced library as "lie-berry" & librarian as "lie-berrian". I can't belive she got paid for this, it was awful.

"Lie-berry"
