Story
Twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail was supposed to enter the Scribe Quadrant, living a quiet life among books and history. Now, the commanding general—also known as her tough-as-talons mother—has ordered Violet to join the hundreds of candidates striving to become the elite of Navarre: dragon riders. But when you’re smaller than everyone else and your body is brittle, death is only a heartbeat away...because dragons don’t bond to “fragile” humans. They incinerate them.

Didn't realize this was a blouse ripping romance
Reviewed: 07-13-24
The story is a good one. But the last third of the book places the story on the back burner and brings the romance 100% to the forefront. Obviously, from all the 5 star reviews, a lot of readers find this entertaining, but I thought it distracted greatly from the overall story. I won't be listening to the 2nd book.

Reidon Ward's first semester at the Galens Institute hasn't been without reward. In just over half a year he's gone from the weakest cadet at school to one of the strongest in his class, and there's no one left who would argue that his Device, Shido, isn't the most terrifying CAD they've ever laid eyes on. Still, Rei knows that his climb has barely begun, like he knows that the true fight is only just starting. After all… The Sectionals tournament has arrived. Rei, along with Aria, Viv, Catcher, and a couple unexpected squadmates, are about to face the first real battle of their careers.

I re-listened to the first book 3 weeks before this one was released. Did you like the first book? Yes! Then you'll like this one. The character building is fantastic, I really feel for the characters. I couldn't put this one down and ripped through it within 5 days. Now I'll likely have another 2.5 years to wait for the next book... :(

Good to Ok to Not so good
Reviewed: 03-06-23
The first part of the book started out really good, caught my attention and kept me listening. From there the book seemed to go downhill. It felt really rushed toward the end. Lots of stereotypes and young teen love story vibes. Also the author lost track of things, for example, a destroyer's ship side hull was less armored than a troop transport. Anyway, I had to listen to the last third at two time speed.

A great adventure
Reviewed: 07-20-22
I really enjoyed this book series. It was down to earth good fantasy fiction. The characters were likable and grew with the story. A coming of age story. the fantasy concept was very interesting, though. the magic lacked depth. nonetheless, overall a good listen. would be good for young adults as well.

You meet the most interesting men in medieval prisons. This one time, I met a guy who offered me immortality for the low, low price of changing my diet. I didn’t read the fine print. Because, he wasn’t talking about a gluten-free diet. More like hemoglobin-full. And now, I’m a friggin’ vampire with five centuries of pop culture references.

In 1914, the war which was to have been wrapped up by Christmas had - in reality - only just begun, as all sides entrenched themselves deeper into the Great War. Christmas Eve, 1914 follows one company of British officers as they rotate forward to spend their Christmas on the front lines, a mere 80 yards from the German guns. Upper- and working-class men and boys are thrown together into one trench and struggle to survive.

This comes across as more of a "play" than a narrated audiobook. I enjoyed it very much. I was a bit teary eyed there at the end.
