Story
Hazel Stillman is a woman of rare independence and limited opportunities. Born with a clubbed foot, she was sent away as a child, and, knowing her disability means a marriage is unlikely, she devoted herself to scholarship and education. Now working as a teacher in an elite private girls’ school, she is content with the way her story has unfolded. When her uncle Elliott Mayfield presents her with the prospect of a substantial inheritance if she marries, Hazel is offended.

I love the Masters. I adore the main character. This book is such a lovely change from ugly, dark, fantasy. I cried at the end. It was so good! I am so sad I have to wait for the next one. I maybread them both again.

Great story, but audio is AI
Reviewed: 07-26-24
I will NEVER get any AI generated audio again. Hadn't tried one before so I ventured. Not good quality. Tear as in tears falling is pronounced "teers". Tear as in rip and shred is pronounced differently. It is only understood by context. Some rhetorical questions still have question marks. No differentiation in voice and flat to boot. If there is a battle going on the voice should sound different than if they are walking through the forest. The story is great! I'm not even done but I usually do a combo of audio and written. The audio is KILLING me!!

I love the characters. What a hoot! Jen Turano is wonderful! I haven't read a bad book of hers. This one was so much fun!! I love Gabrielle, but Daphne is such a fun oddity! I am really looking forward to the next book. Don't miss this if you love clean sweet romances with adventure and a lot of humor. I love the empowered women who still have a lot of flaws. I can't say enough of this book. Can't wait til the next one! Religion is there, but is a part of the story and never gets in the way. The story rules marvelously and still uplifts. Don't miss out. When Crispin, Lord Cavratt, thoroughly and scandalously kisses a serving woman in the garden of a country inn, he assumes the encounter will be of no consequence. But he couldn’t be more mistaken - the maid is not only a lady of birth, she’s the niece of a very large, exceptionally angry gentleman, who claims Crispin has compromised his niece beyond redemption. The dismayed young lord has no choice but to marry Miss Catherine Thorndale, who lacks both money and refinement and assumes all men are as vicious as her guardian uncle.

The first of one of my favorite series!
Reviewed: 03-26-22
I just love clean, sweet romances! Sarah Eden is one of my favorite authors. I am re-reading this book and have fallen in love with the characters all over again. This book is awesome, but the next is my favorite. I am there with the characters. Work away from reading is a chore; sleep unessential. I started reading and was playing the audiobook in my living room where my sister and daughter were. I got up to leave the room with my book playing and was told not to go. My daughter picked it up where I left off. She told my sister the next day when she was up very early that she'd been book-napped! We ALL love these books with their dashing heroes and spunky heroines. My dad has even read and liked them. You cannot go wrong buying this book!

I loved this book and the last one as well! My favorite romance series have glimpses of the past and future characters in the story arc. This one does. It has many wonderful characters. This one does. It leaves you smiling and wanting more. I love this as much as my other favorite authors: Sarah M Eden and Georgette Heyer. I love Melanie Dickerson and Maggie Brendan. I love Jen Turano and Julie Klassen. This is one of the best romances I've read in a long time and I can hardly wait for the next installment. My daughter and I both just moaned when we saw we were going to have to wait. If you love sweet romances these Mayfield family books are lovely.

Loved it!!

I like science fiction some, just not a lot. I don't like war stories over much and I am not into dystopias or post apocalyptic stories, but I LOVED this book!! Harry Potter wasn't about magic as much as it was people. The interplay between the characters, the things they learn, and the things they come to value are what make the books great.
The characters in this book are awesome! I like what it says about so many things, and I don't want to spoil anything. It is performed well. I normally get up abt 4 a.m. so I don't stay up for anything, ever. This book had me on pins and needles and I waved off everyone telling me to go to bed towards the end. I didn't finish til 11:00 p.m. which is most people's 2a.m. I was cheering and practically jumping up and down at the end.
I have listened to it twice, pre-ordered the new up-coming one, and purchased the hard back for my kids to read. I can't recommend it highly enough. It takes some time to get rolling and some parts are hard or sad. The story is clean, but they are in a war and the book describes aerial battles.
If you have kids 10 and up and need a book for a long car ride, this is it. I think anyone of any age will love it. My husband is reading it now and my dad will read the hardback. The Audible version is excellent. You have to try this one. I put it off for a long time because of the things mentioned earlier. I really am glad I finally read it. I can hardly wait for the next one!!

Story
When Persephone Lancaster receives a marriage proposal from the ill-tempered Duke of Kielder, she refuses - and then reconsiders. The obscene sum of money he's offering Persephone would save her family from ruin. With her characteristic optimism, she travels to the far reaches of Northumberland to wed a greatly feared stranger. Lodged deep in a thick forest infested with wild dogs, the Duke's castle is as cold and forbidding as the Duke himself, a man with terrible scars on his body and his soul.
