Chilling But Critical History

Costa and Woodward have pulled together a compelling and accurate historical account of America on the brink of falling into fascism. Viewing the questions at the end of this book from our now-2024 vantage point ("is Trump consumed with wanting all power?"), we are watching the dangers of Trump come to fruition as he now nears the white house once again. If he wins in November, this book will serve as not just a warning bell but as a condemnation of the state of our society, willing to let a monster hellbent on revenge take over our nation. We will be judged by future Americans... if there is an America left...

Great dissertation on the definition of misinformation and all its iterations, and how it's being used today in America to tear this country apart. It's pretty bleak, but there is hope in the end when McQuade issues dozens of suggestions as to how to combat it. A must read for any American who wishes to save our democracy in this terrible era.

As a former right wing evangelical for over 40 years, like Onishi I lived what he describes in this book. I, too, asked myself: would I have been there on January 6th? Ironically, the actions of my fellow eva's during the Trump era is the very thing that pushed me away from that ideology. I appreciate the background that Onishi provided for both the evangelical and right wing histories. I knew some of it already from many authors he thanks in the book, but his unique perspective as an Asian American in SoCal is one I'd not considered nor heard before. I'd also never heard of the ReDoubt movement, which was fascinating and chilling to learn of. Since this book was released in 2022, some of what Onishi predicts in the book has come true: Trump has now been indicted 4 times for several crimes including attempting to steal the election, and this has only served to grow the white supremacist Myth to a fever pitch, with his ratings, and coffers, skyrocketing, and violent rhetoric taking center stage. Tucker Carlson is fomenting civil war, pre-accusing democrats of wanting to kill Trump. As Onishi says in the book, accountability from both parties is the only way out. May we find our way back to sanity!

I'd say I loved this informative book if it weren't so darn disturbing to listen to it in 2021, after what the author described would come true, came true (the Insurrection). Trump is now out of the Whitehouse but we still see his Cult living in lock step with his legacy. We are so doomed.

Jonathan Karl's accounting of the events that led up to and took place after the 2020 election are top notch. So accurate that I felt like I was reliving it all over again. But when I heard him put all of it together into one long story, it gave an even clearer picture of how Trump, his cronies, and his ardent followers nearly brought our Democracy down than I remember. The facts don't lie. It made me realize what a travesty of justice it is that so few people have been held accountable. Anyway, the narration is good, the way the facts are laid out is excellent and accurate... this would actually be a great resource for classrooms.

I love listening to dark, gothic ghost stories around in the Fall leading up to Halloween and this compilation fits that whole mood. It's the kind of stuff you'd hear told around the fireplace in an old English Inn back in the 1800s. It's not very scary for adults, but it's delightfully creepy in an old fashioned kind of way.

Dune is one of my favorite books but the way they tried to do a play-like performance in parts of it was really odd. As many already said, it's inconsistent... sometimes the narrator does the voices (excellently) and then suddenly they'll do a mini dramatization. I wish the narrator did the whole thing. but overall it's still great because the story is great.

This book was so good that i listened to it in two days. It supports and confirms the dozens of other books written about this dangerous man by other people who know him.

This quick and easy listen taught me a ton about the history, science, and neurobiology of caffeine. And the author had a light demeanor which made it pleasant to listen to.
