Becomes a bit of a slog

I'm glad we can get so many different conflicts to life without each being a 15-hour listen, but some of these short stories started to blend into the last one and the next. Tensions, justifications, and character development felt too similar between some of the stories. But, the action is great, and I enjoyed listening watching some of these iconic characters make their impact.

This book isn't entirely chronological, and that's usually fine, but gets a bit confusing at times. The stories are great, I just think the order (especially near the first half) wasn't the best. As expected the last few stories make up for this with being very entertaining.

This book does an amazing job of making some of the most powerful and godlike characters feel real, human, and understandable. It's hands down one of the most important books in a while. Everything feels a lot more at stake by the time you've finished this one.

Just like how "The Path of Heaven" (Book 36) was an awesome deep dive into the current state of the White Legion, this is all about the Raven Guard. If you're a fan of them, or what their goals are within the remaining Horus Heresy then this is your book.

This stood out as a great story from all angles. The politics felt reasonable and interesting. The action was easy to follow and not absurd. Most importantly, the characters felt easy to separate, follow along with, and empathize with. This changed my perspective on a lot of what's happening on Terra.

Overall a good story with a great amount of unique characters. The overall plot is good, but the ending left me a little mixed. However, I still recommend it as an important book in the series.

The story is great, and each legion's character felt different which added to the clearly stated tension. The story was good, and the interactions between primarchs was always engaging.

John Banks does an amazing performance with each of the characters. Focusing heavily on what the White Scars have been up to was refreshing. A lot of justification and context is given to where they stand in the Horus Heresy.

While the timeline of each story was even more sporadic, most felt well timed and not old or overstated. Again, the last few stories probably carry a bit of recency bias due to how good they were.

The story is great, and the stakes feel very real for the war at-large. As always, the Night Lords continue to a have extremely well written characters who are objectively evil, selfish, yet somehow understandable in their motives. Definitely worth a listen.
