Two Truths and a Lie. The girls played it all the time in their cabin at Camp Nightingale. Vivian, Natalie, Allison, and first-time camper Emma Davis, the youngest of the group. But the games ended the night Emma sleepily watched the others sneak out of the cabin into the darkness. The last she - or anyone - saw of them was Vivian closing the cabin door behind her, hushing Emma with a finger pressed to her lips. Now a rising star in the NYC art scene, Emma's paintings catch the attention of Francesca Harris-White, the socialite and wealthy owner of the very same Camp Nightingale.

Ugh. This was terrible.
Reviewed: 11-21-24
This main character has no business working at a summer camp. Spying on people in the shower, getting drunk on duty, losing all the kids in her cabin, and being snippy, moody, confrontational with the cops who just want to solve the case, and delusional. One of the most boring and unlikeable characters ever. Also, this story went on way too long.

Creepy, well-written, great narrator
Reviewed: 10-13-24
This book was perfect until the last few chapters, where it became melodramatic, too wordy and overly philosophical. The author did a fantastic job of just focusing on the child and her creepy other mommy until those last few chapters. Then, he tries to weave a pithy, profound philosophical personal treatise of sorts about life and it is boring and sappy. Where was the editor? Still, with the exception of those chapters, this is an excellent, creepy read with a fantastic narrator.

Suspenseful and creepy
Reviewed: 10-10-24
This was a great book. Familiar horror tropes, but still creepy and fun. Well written and good narrator. Keeps you guessing throughout. Only complaint: annoying transmission?? sounds at the end of every chapter. The beeping is annoying and doesn’t really make sense. Is it supposed to sound like a radio? A transmission? Doesn’t make sense. Other than that, excellent book!

Unbelievably unbelievable
Reviewed: 12-27-22
The only things missing from this ridiculously unbelievable story were unicorns, ancient curses and an alien abduction. It’s well-written in the sense that it flows, and I didn’t give up on it. But so, so much just doesn’t make sense and it’s annoying. Good narrator who deserves a better story.

Story
Years ago, bookseller and mystery aficionado Malcolm Kershaw compiled a list of the genre’s most unsolvable murders, those that are almost impossible to crack - which he titled "Eight Perfect Murders". But no one is more surprised than Mal, now the owner of the Old Devils Bookstore in Boston, when an FBI agent comes knocking on his door one snowy day in February. She’s looking for information about a series of unsolved murders that look eerily similar to the killings on Mal’s old list. And the FBI agent isn’t the only one interested in this bookseller.

This book is mystery book spoiler central!!
Reviewed: 07-13-21
Ugh!!!! This book ruined over a dozen amazing mystery books by totally revealing their endings and twists!!!!! Many I had read, but some I was curious to revisit—until this book went and explained what happened on each. Bummer. Great premise with a decent execution and a semi good ending. I’d at its worth it if you love mystery books and bookstores, but watch out for those many, many spoilers.

Wow! Listen just to hear Bronson Pinchot read!
Reviewed: 07-12-21
Bronson Pinchot is a genius. This is the first book I’ve heard read by him, and I wish Patricia Highsmith were alive to hear him. He brings the book and the characters to life—especially the character of the despicable yet pathetic Bruno. I have read this book before snd liked it very much, but Pinchot breathes life into it like you wouldn’t believe. The book itself is very good, and the character of Bruno is a fascinating repulsive yet tragic character. But really, for me the highlight was just listening to Pinchot’s amazing performance.

If you love great fiction, creepy stories, lots of lit and film references—especially to horror, classical music, odd cinema and poetry—then this is your book. I cannot imagine reading this book without Weber’s narration: he is perfect. The book is fantastic, and unfolds like a film in the mind as you listen. I am a book/audiobook fiend, but I rarely write such raving reviews. This book was truly fantastic.
