About this listen

"Fiendish good fun." (Anthony Horowitz)

From the hugely talented author of Before She Knew Him comes a chilling tale of psychological suspense and an homage to the thriller genre tailor-made for fans: the story of a bookseller who finds himself at the center of an FBI investigation because a very clever killer has started using his list of fiction’s most ingenious murders.

Years ago, bookseller and mystery aficionado Malcolm Kershaw compiled a list of the genre’s most unsolvable murders, those that are almost impossible to crack - which he titled "Eight Perfect Murders" - chosen from among the best of the best including Agatha Christie’s ABC Murders, Patricia Highsmith’s Strangers on a Train, Ira Levin’s Death Trap, A. A. Milne's Red House Mystery, Anthony Berkeley Cox's Malice Aforethought, James M. Cain's Double Indemnity, John D. Macdonald's The Drowner, and Donna Tartt's A Secret History.

But no one is more surprised than Mal, now the owner of the Old Devils Bookstore in Boston, when an FBI agent comes knocking on his door one snowy day in February. She’s looking for information about a series of unsolved murders that look eerily similar to the killings on Mal’s old list. And the FBI agent isn’t the only one interested in this bookseller who spends almost every night at home reading. There is killer is out there, watching his every move - a diabolical threat who knows way too much about Mal’s personal history, especially the secrets he’s never told anyone, even his recently deceased wife.

To protect himself, Mal begins looking into possible suspects...and sees a killer in everyone around him. But Mal doesn’t count on the investigation leaving a trail of death in its wake. Suddenly, a series of shocking twists leaves more victims dead - and the noose around Mal’s neck grows so tight he might never escape.

Different

It was very realistic. Very predictable. Characters were good about a man who works at a book store and his wife dies.

I loved it!

I’ve listened to this several times, it’s just so good and the narrator is brilliant. You do want to make sure you have read the novels mentioned or risk a lot of spoilers. But they are classic novels so you’ll probably know them already or have seen the movies. It’s an homage to classic mysteries and it works really well. It isn’t as dark as The Kind Worth Killing but I think it’s excellent.

Great story

Would have given this five stars but I found the narrate voice annoying. That being said I'm glad I hung on there.

This book is mystery book spoiler central!!

Ugh!!!! This book ruined over a dozen amazing mystery books by totally revealing their endings and twists!!!!! Many I had read, but some I was curious to revisit—until this book went and explained what happened on each. Bummer. Great premise with a decent execution and a semi good ending. I’d at its worth it if you love mystery books and bookstores, but watch out for those many, many spoilers.

If you love classic mysteries

Just loved this! A perfect blend of references to classics and a great twist (or two, or three). While the story line evolves and keeps you guessing, I gathered some things about the conclusion - but here is the important part - this book is more than just the end and who done it. I would have read it for the characters, the way the pacing kept you going, interested, all along the way. Wonderful writing. I heard a rumor that this could be the beginning of a series, and although I'm not sure I could picture it, but oh my gosh I don't want to get my hopes up!! I really want to hang out with Malcolm again, and find out what happens at the bookstore.

I loved it.

I couldn't stop listening to this book all the way through whenever I could. I can't imagine how it is Book 1 though, but I will be listening to book 2 when it becomes available. I enjoyed the main character and story teller Malcolm and very much would enjoy hearing more from him. Peter Swanson does a fantastic job developing his anti-heroes and I don't have to admire them to love them in his books and I do. We all keep wishing that Mr. Swanson would write another The Kind Worth Killing, but in the meantime read this one and enjoy a well developed and addicting story. Also the narrator was super good.
