A sweet American Cinderella Story

The virtual voice did amazingly well with the different types of speech in this story. I also appreciated the sincerity of faith that the main characters displayed. I think this story would be even better if it were expanded to include more details from the personal histories of the main characters and more development of the Underground Railroad work in Philadelphia.

Some interesting twists and turns in the story. I almost quit reading because the voice had a strange dreamlike quality which had me thinking the story might become a nightmare. It didn’t, though, and had a satisfactory conclusion to the developing relationships.

Story
Detective Olivia Mast would rather run through gunfire than return to her former Amish community in Unity, Maine, where she killed her abusive husband in self-defense and witnessed her family's murder. After an Amish man is murdered, the community will not answer questions from the police, so she begrudgingly dons her old prayer kapp and heads to Unity to investigate the murder undercover. To make things even worse, her captain also orders her to protect the man she dated as a teen: Isaac Troyer, who was attacked on the night of the murder but can't remember the incident.

This was an exciting story with interesting characters. But do not read this expecting a typical Amish romance. The last half of the book is almost constant violence and psychological trauma. Helping those who can’t help themselves is a major theme of this story. Getting and receiving forgiveness is another.

Again, the story was exciting enough to make up for the mispronunciations of the virtual voice. Knowing that there were six young women who needed new beginnings, it was good to have them all provided for. I don’t want to give away plot twists, but there were some. The author did a good job of giving the characters distinctive personalities, too.

The Characters
Reviewed: 04-04-24
Thank you Sally Britton for the well written and interesting stories in this series. But thank you even more for the range of characters you present, and through them glimpses into history. Illiteracy, the ravages of smallpox and the dangers of tuberculosis. The standing of women and the sometimes ridiculous rules of the culture.
