It started good but then downhill
Reviewed: 02-12-25
The first half was very interesting, and very informative.
The discussion surrounded the good and the bad of the drug.
But then itsit spiraled down into ranting about diet culture.
There was even a part where the narrator said she likes to preach at white women about black women bodies.
Somebody could actually come away from this book if they believed what was said that weight has nothing to do with health.
If you like to be lectured about social justice and weight, this book will be of interest to you.

Reviewed: 02-10-25
The storyline was good, the character development decent but the narration... oh my... it was BORING. So monotone and flat. I will make sure not to purchase a book with this narrator again.

Story
In the late 1990s, a young physician in Albuquerque, New Mexico, published a stunning memoir of his experiences in the highly charged world of the ER. Presented in a series of powerful, poetic vignettes, The Blood of Strangers became an instant classic. Now, over two decades later, Dr. Frank Huyler delivers another dispatch from the trenches—this time from the perspective of middle age. In portraits visceral, haunting, sometimes surreal, Huyler reveals the gritty reality of medicine practiced on the razor’s edge between life and death.

1/2 Amish overview, 1/2 motivational
Reviewed: 09-19-24
I found and followed Lizzie on social media and wanted to hear more about the Amish upbringing and insight only someone like her could have. The book has some of that, but not as much as I had hoped.
She has a good balance of beautiful stories about her family, siblings and the community while sharing some of her personal struggles with living in the Amish community. She retells all of it with honesty, love and respect.
Once she begins to talk about her life after she left the Amish community, the tone of the book also changes. While there is a little bit of insight of her struggles in her new life, the book becomes motivational in tone. She encourages the reader to make changes, and be all they can be. She is encouraging, makes common sense, and is a good role model.
The book it short and sweet.
I wish I would have realized how much motivational info was in it. It was fine, just not what I expected.

In March 2020, soon-to-graduate medical students in New York City were nervously awaiting “match day” when they would learn where they would begin their residencies. Only a week later, these young physicians learned that they would be sent to the front lines of the desperate battle to save lives as the coronavirus plunged the city into crisis. In this powerful book, New York Times journalist Emma Goldberg offers an up-close portrait of six bright yet inexperienced health professionals, each of whom defies a stereotype about who gets to don a doctor’s white coat.

Should be titled “Diatribe about gender and race”

Should be titled, “Diatribe about gender and race”
The expectation of a book about doctors during covid is that there are a lot of stories and info about covid, yet 1/3 or 1/2 of the book is a lecture about race and gender.
The author, who is not a doctor or in the medical field, goes on and on that one of the reasons that people are so sick is because of white control. She says the medical community is racist and often makes choices to deliberately hurt people of color.
She says the reason that people are so sick has nothing to do with personal responsibility, but because of normalized systemic racism in the medical industry and that racism is purposeful and systemic.
Early in the book she says that PTSD and trauma that gay men experience in NYC are the same as families of holocaust survivors due to the number of friends they lost in the AIDS epidemic. And don’t worry, she got “police brutality” in there as well.
She talked about the lack of ventilators early on in the pandemic and blamed it on corporations, never once mentioning that government allowed this stockpile to be low.
There were a few interesting stories within the ranting. Manny and the many people who tried to help him was one of those. More of those stories would have made this book significantly better.
If you are a looking for a book with a few covid stories and a lot of ranting and lecturing about gender and race, this book is for you.

He doesn’t want love, she doesn’t have time for love, so that just leaves the sex. Their arrangement could be surprisingly seamless, as long as Tate can stick to the only two rules Miles has for her.

Most books just explain the problem. Glucose Revolution explains the problem and then gives simple answers to fix the issue.

Unlikeable, whiny main character
Reviewed: 05-29-24
The story had such potential but it ended as it started.. a whiny woman (main character Julie) who could only see the negative. The narrator did an okay job because the narration was boring, just like Julie. The narrator literally nailed with the monotone and dull voice.
It started strong, characters started good and story built up interesting, but Julie literally looked to be offended.
Example: She gets a compliment (something like this), "you look so great today. You look good pregnant" and she finds FAULT in how someone is commenting on her body. She literally goes into detail why someone would say that. It is like she is looking to be offended.
She did go through a traumatic experience and had legitimate reason to be angry and confused about the decisions ahead, but she found fault in her husband, neighbors, mother-in-law, doctors, friends and even her child.
In real life this woman would a drain to be around.
