Best ending
Reviewed: 08-24-24
Meandering and a bit unstructured, as is typical of royal road type projects. But the ending was, as Max Best would say, mint.
If the quality keeps improving like this, it will become a genuine five star series.

Where do we come from? How did our ancestors settle this planet? How did the great historic civilizations of the world develop? How does a past so shadowy that it has to be painstakingly reconstructed from fragmentary, largely unwritten records nonetheless make us who and what we are?
These 36 lectures bring you the answers that the latest scientific and archaeological research and theorizing suggest about human origins, how populations developed, and the ways in which civilizations spread throughout the globe.

Rushed Ending
Reviewed: 06-11-23
Love the series. Disappointed in this book. The ending is rushed, the power growth unearned, in opposition to the whole style of the series, and it's 90% combat.
So much has to happen in this book that there is, paradoxically, not much that happens. In a can't stop to smell the roses sort of way.
This seemed like 4-5 books of content shoehorned into one.
The author wanted done with this, and I get that. But it was the only Cradle I haven't liked. The characters don't have any room to be.
I hope you all have better luck with it.
Thank you for the ride, Cradle.

Jin Rou wanted to be a cultivator. A man powerful enough to defy the heavens. A master of martial arts. A lord of spiritual power. Unfortunately for him, he died, and now I’m stuck in his body. Arrogant Masters? Heavenly Tribulations? All that violence and bloodshed? Yeah, no thanks. I’m getting out of here. Farm life sounds pretty great. Tilling a field by hand is fun when you’ve got the strength of ten men—though maybe I shouldn’t have fed those Spirit Herbs to my pet rooster.

I needed to get away from the world and this was a welcome refuge. It made me laugh, and it was low stakes. If you've read a handful of cultivation stories or manhua, you'll laugh a lot in the first third of the book and it'll set you up nicely for the rest.
A niche gem.

Loved the first book, enjoyed this one, but it slowed things down, slowed down character dev and conflict, world building, etc, and included a lot of chapter long descriptions of leveling up powers and talking about powers and talking about leveling up powers. The plot part could fit in about 8 hours.
I hope the next is tighter, but I am buying the next one right now to find out.
The first one was great fun. This one is not exactly bad but lacks focus and has a ton of 30 minute stat dumps.

As a particle physicist, William Jenkins is as unsuited to survival on an alien world as any normal 30-something post-doc could be. Thankfully, he’s not alone. With an AI, magic, scientific curiosity, and, most improbably, a deity on his side, Will must come to terms with his new reality before otherworldly terrors forever extinguish the light of hope on this new world.

Worst LITRPG. Rage inducing.
Reviewed: 10-27-21
The opening and set up is totally fine. But when the litrpg element begins, the main character screams in madness and denial and doesn't stop for A LONG TIME. He was so annoying I almost threw my computer across the room. Also, don't expect the main character to be smart because he's absolutely no smarter than any other chud MC out there.
I've read about 100 litrp novels, and this is in my bottom 5.
I could not finish the book. I quit 6 hours in when I could no longer stomach it.
I'm not going to return this book, because when you return a book it deletes your review. I'm going to take the credit hit just so this stays here as a warning. This is a very bad book. You won't believe me at first, as I said, the first couple hours are fine, but oh, you'll really see if you keep going.
If this has lots of high reviews, remember that anyone who returns it has their review removed, and believe me, lots of people are returning this nightmare.

Very little happens in this book in terms of conflict or character development. It's straight wish fulfillment. Which is fine. Just know what to expect. I enjoyed a newer book by this author and so checked this out, it's a bit thinner. So just know what you're going in for. Some fun wish fulfillment and hugely OP stuff and enjoy it for what it is. <3
The only time I wanted to throw the book at the wall was when the (mildest of spoilers) character quoted robert frost and did the thing where she's obviously never read the poem itself, only the quote? Because it does not mean what she thinks it means. O'well.
Bless to the author, and great job, Narrator. Glad you have grown since and appreciate your work.

Excellent low stakes litrpg.
Reviewed: 09-14-21
This story focuses on only the first day of playing a game, and that may seem crazy, but it works anyway. It feels real, the start of a new game and everything that goes on in it, and really rekindles that feeling in me. It did not lag at all, but I wasn't really desirous of breakneck pace, so for some that may not be what they want. The stakes are low. The game is fun. It's just... a really enjoyable and charming listen.
Ellen Quay did a lovely job all around but did mispronounce a couple words, like kitsune (but it's rare, so it won't detract).
The writing was earnest and clean.
I wish I had a LOT more to read. This just perfeclty hit the spot of what I was looking for. If you want interesting but casual game lit, it's flavored just right. It's like a big bowl of mac'n cheese. Hope you write fast, Jay Boyce!

Okay book, below expectations.
Reviewed: 03-21-21
This is an interesting era of the world's history, and so I expected an interesting book, but Mr Modesitte managed to tell a story neither about an interesting series of events, nor an interesting character development. I think it was written without passion. After this, the author has focused on a new series. I think that's wise. This is totally readable and listenable, but it lacks the life and growth normally packed thoughtfully into his work. A swing and a miss. If this is all the passion he has left (and I don't blame anyone after 22 books!) then he should leave it alone. Maybe he will come back and hit one out of the park, but I think nothing is better than this level of work.
Thank you, Modessitte, and Heyborne, for the many, many years of stories I've been able to enjoy from you. I picked up Magic of Recluce when I was 13 years old, and I'm 40 now. Recluce has been with me for so long. Thank you.

I am sick of a lot of stuff, I consume tooooooo many audiobooks from self published authors. This one is good and fun and I didn't hate myself at all while reading it!!! Good sequel. Andrea is lovely. Easy to enjoy. If you like the first book, read this one, it's as good.
For the narrator, we all know she's great and 90% of the time she's in my top 5. Though I am honestly sick of all males she narrates being Scottish, though. What is up with that? Asian inspired setting? Scottish. Life on another world? Scottish. I love her normal male voices, but this gets annoying over 5 or 10 books. (I love her anyway, she's a very skilled reader and charming)
I hope the author will include a bit more world building for us to see. I'm expecting he will. Happy to read the next book. I'm as patient to take in things about the world as I am about magic or any of the characters. It was really a peaceful read to me, really let me escape the horrors of the past year for a little while and I am deeply grateful for that.
P.S. If you hate people showing affection to each other, some parts of this will drag. But if the first book was fine with you, this one will be to. Though all sings point to haram building, I'll probably leave then if it gets like that. Doesn't seem to have any purpose besides wish fulfillment. The characters don't seem suited to it at all.
