Landslide of Tropes

You get a trope! You get a trope! You get a trope!
Good gracious, this book is painfully full of them and not done very well. The fmc is an idi0t, the mmc is a cookie-cutter character, and the whole story is a miasma of badly woven tropes.
I dnf'd at ch. 18 bc I have better things to do with my time.

Story
Of all the worlds and life they created, the gods favored their children the most. But with that favor came the fear that their Legacy would one day become too powerful and overthrow them. Devram was created. A realm hidden amongst the stars. The gods gave their Legacy the best of all the worlds, and then they left, a sworn agreement to never return and to never interfere.

Info dump city. Narrator's flip between narration without an accent to doing the voices with makes my head spin and is not done with natural tones/inflections.
Now to the story. it's just not my cuppa. By ch 2, I was like, "NOPE. nope. nope." Maybe it's my hang up, but I can't stand when a strong FMC is cowed by the MMC forcibly. I'm not talking about 🍇 (but that too). I'm talking about men in power taking "ownership" of the FMC. Whether it be arranged marriage, royalty over subject, etc, etc. Then they 'fall in love." Ummm...F that. Women have not been put on this planet to fix a man, be his servant, or his accessory. Please authors, do better.

Story
When I jetted off to Vegas for a reluctant girls’ weekend, the last thing I expected was to tumble through a portal into an alternate reality. Now, I'm stuck in a world straight out of a fantasy, collared by a king who can't stand the sight of me, and roped into a deal he insists I struck in a previous life - a life where I was an Elven princess, arch-rival to his court. I keep telling myself it's all a crazy dream, but the memories that barrage me every night are too real to ignore.

I cannot stand this trope. Firstly, she's supposed to be smart, yet doesn't keep an eye on her drink? In this day & age IN VEGAS?!?! Seriously? That was my first red flag, but then it gets worse. FMC basically gets kidnapped on behest of a king who drops the 411 of her being an elf princess and then COLLARS her with ownership. He then proceeds to only cloth her in lingerie-esque and keeps her locked up. Blah, blah, blah, Chapter skip, chapter skip, chapter skip bc I've read how this goes a billion times. Save a kingdom, fall I love with your ahole captor or some poop nonsense, then become some kind of BA at the end to save the day. Whatever. I only skipped more chapters to get me far enough in the book so I can Rate & Review it or else I would've DNF this garbage at ch. 4.

The ending though, completely shook me. I did not see that coming and had my feelings all over the place.
Narration was on-point, beautiful story arc, and I am extremely satisfied how it ended.
I do wonder how they'll integrate back into society. Would love so see maybe a novella on those challenges. Anywho, great job, KC! Keep 'em coming!

Lots of skipping
Reviewed: 01-13-25
I hate this "I love you, even though I've been lying to you since we met, but it's for your own good/greater good." And she be like, "Oh, you love me? Okay, you're forgiven, even though the lies, betrayal, and humiliation nearly destroyed me. Let's hit the sheets because I can only show you how much I love you if you're between my legs."
It's been a year and she hasn't gone through the stages of loss and grieved the demise of their relationship. Just sputtering around the hate merey-go-round. Then within a few days, is back on Team Wilder. This makes no psychological sense. Her 180⁰ weakens her character.
The justification and Wilder not taking any ownership of the wrong he's done, is another huge ick for me. Blah, blah, blah, 30-second skip, 30-second skip. Yes, his reasons are noble, but an apology for his buttholery should've been the #1 talking point, THEN go into the whys. This brought my opinion of him even lower.
The points/justifications to change her tune make no sense either. Whatever. "I don't deserve his forgiveness." You have got to be kidding me. Really?!?! They wouldn't be at odds if he trusted her and didn't withhold information. Like, DUH! My eyes hurt from rolling too hard.
Depending how this book ends, I may not finish this series unless I hear that apology.

I was thrilled to get into a series that didn't fall I to an overdone trope. Then I got to the end and was literally ready to toss my phone with a vicious scream. Tbh, I was upset & disappointed.

The male narrator ruined it for me
Reviewed: 01-12-25
The story itself is so good, but the male narrator parts kept pulling me out of the tory. I have never heard a male narrator sound so boring during spicy scenes. So many times I had to rewind to relisten to his parts bc I would get distracted by unicorns, squirrels, and when the wind changed direction. << joke <<
But seriously, not a good voice actor at all. Barely any emotion or inflection relevant to what was going on in the scenes. Sarah Sampino did a superb job. Between the riveting story and Sarah, I am looking forward to the 3rd book. Guess I'll just muddle through Liam's parts like I did this one.

Was getting so sick of the same ole same ole tropes so giving in to my tbr and discovering this series was very refreshing!
Though I loved this story, I wish the male narrator didn't come in at the end. Not a fan at all and took me out of the story entirely. Sarah Sampino was excellent though.
The writing was well crafted and kept me wanting more.

Story
After watching my mother succumb to a mysterious illness, I promised myself two things. I'd find the cure for what ravaged her and leave the godforsaken city where she abandoned me. Four years later, I received an acceptance letter from Dracadia University, one of the oldest most prestigious schools in the country. Nestled on a secluded island off the coast of Maine, it's rumored to be haunted by the souls of the mental patients exiled there centuries before, those whose bones are said to make up the island's white sandy shores. And restless ghosts aren't even its most daunting peculiarity.
