For some it’s an opportunity. For others it’s a moment to question their faith: In God, in science, in everything. Still others try to keep the world running in the face of absurdity and uncertainty. And then there are the billions looking to the sky and wondering how a thing that was always just there is now... something absolutely impossible.

What a weird premiss that kinda relates to the weird reality we’re currently living in
Reviewed: 03-31-25
I generally love Scalzi’s books and listen to them as I quilt. This one was not a favorite. Even so, it was an interesting listen and I will definitely listen to his next book. I loved Starter Villain but that had a much less weird premiss. I just couldn’t wrap my head around how, in this or any universe, the moon could turn to cheese. As I listened to each day’s vignette of different characters reacting and dealing with the event, my mind kept wandering, trying to figure out the author’s underlying message. Given the current political nightmare that those of us who have not been brainwashed know it to be, I wondered if the plot of this book could be compared in some way to the lies we are told and acted upon every day. Could our current reality be just as weird as if the moon turned to cheese? I kinda think so.

Hated narration. Virtual voice did a terrible job. Mispronounced a few words. Kept the same “voice” through the whole narration making it difficult to determine who was speaking. Kept the Indian accent through the whole thing even though much of the book took place in the USA with American characters. A real performer would have changed accents and given characters their own distinct voice. USE REAL PEOPLE TO NARRATE!!!!

Seventeen years ago. That was the last time Mercy Callahan saw Ephraim Burton, the leader of the twisted Eden cult where she was raised. But even though she escaped the abuse and terror, they continue to haunt her. When her brother Gideon discovers new evidence of the cult's - and their victims' - whereabouts, Mercy goes to Sacramento to reconnect with him. There, she meets Gideon's closest friend - homicide detective Rafe Sokolov. From Rafe, she receives an offer she never knew she needed: to track down Ephraim and make him pay for everything.

I now like the narrator!

First off, this is another great book by Karen Rose! I don’t know what more to say about her writing other than that all of her books are gripping, great stories.
When I listened to the first book in this series, Say No More, I hated the narrator because he gave the female protagonist a voice like a haughty drag queen. It was a poor choice and made that book tough to listen to. When I saw that the same narrator was used for the 2 remaining books in the series, I hesitated to use credits on these books. But, I still wanted to hear more of the story. I was so glad I did! This book was a great listen! The voices he gave these protagonists were great and I found myself lost in the story rather than focused on the voice of the narrator!

Story
There is a serial killer on the loose preying on vulnerable women. The only identifiable mark the killer leaves are letters - sometimes one, sometimes two - all carved into the torsos of his victims. Together, they spell “Sydney”. When he grabs Daisy Dawson, he believes he has found his next victim. But despite her small stature, she fights back with an expertise that quickly frees her. Before fleeing the scene, Daisy also manages to grab what proves to be crucial evidence: a necklace from around the killer’s neck.

Great story, lousy narrator
Reviewed: 06-29-24
I love how characters from previous books are intertwined into the book. The story was, well, it’s a Karen Rose book and her stories are always gripping. That’s what kept me listening to the whole torturous reading. The narrator was an awful choice. He was fine with making each character have their own voice, but his choice for the female protagonist especially was the worst. It took me a long while to like her because of the haughty way he emphasized her words, like a condescending drag queen with attitude. Shoot, now I bet if you’ve read this review, that’s all you’ll hear when you listen. Sorry for that but I calls them like I hears them.

Great story and great narration!
Reviewed: 06-06-24
I loved this book! Will definitely listen to the whole series! The narration was superb! Each character had their own voice and there was no confusion as to who was talking. One of the characters, a mentor to the protagonist, sounded just like Sean Connery! I hope Mr. Degas will narrate all of Mr. Hastie's books! The story line is great and we're left with a cliffhanger at the end. So, having just finished this book, I'm off to download the 2nd in the series.

Then, from the stage, Jake catches her eye, and smiles. It’s the best night of her life. It’s the last night of her life. Minutes later, Jake’s in the alley getting some fresh air, and the girl from the dance floor comes stumbling out, sick and confused and deathly pale. He tries to help, but it’s no use. Great Addition to the Series
Reviewed: 02-05-24
I just finished binge listening to the entire series, start to finish. Yeah, it took a couple of months. I love the narrator! She really gives each character their own recognizable voice and I forget that this is just one very talented woman giving voice to all the great characters. The story is great, of course, it’s JD Robb aka Nora Roberts, so the plot is always good and well written. The only problem I had was Eve’s propensity for taking apart ordinary sayings and trying to change them to her brand of logic. I think if I’d have listened to all 58 full length books with a good length of time between them, I would have enjoyed this quirk of the character’s personality.

Narrator’s lisp was distracting
Reviewed: 06-03-23
On the first book of this series the woman who narrated was fine. However, there were some negative comments about her. I wonder now after listening to this narrator’s lisp through the whole book, whether Ms. Roberts selected him as revenge to those who didn’t like the first narrator. The story was engaging, and I will listen to the 3rd in the series, but I’ll be cringing at every lisp if it’s the same narrator.

After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

This story is charming…..Cameron is not.
Reviewed: 01-26-23
This was a very good listen. The only thing that would have made it better is if Cameron were somewhere between 16 and 19 years old. He often sounds and acts like a petulant child. Whenever his age came up, I listened very closely to make sure I had not heard it wrong earlier in the book. His constant whining and adolescent reactions were not those of a 30 year old man. That annoyance aside, it still was a very very good listen!

Rumors of the seemingly magical victory that allowed the Exodus of Israelites from Egypt have resonated through the archaeological world for decades. Now evidence has been discovered that explains how the ancient Hebrews destroyed the unstoppable army of Pharaoh - a tribe of warriors who disappeared after the destruction of the City of Jericho, taking with them the most valued treasures of a people without a homeland. Today a treasure of a different kind is unearthed at the lost ruins of Jericho, one that will change the history of God’s Chosen people for all time - the petrified remains of an animal that could not exist.
