Missing half the story
Reviewed: 12-14-24
This book would be good if it wasn’t missing the second half of the story. The characters are well drawn, the crisis was good, but the characters made such an absurdity abrupt hurtle to the predictable end without necessary events and introspection that I was surprised it was actually the end.

Story
Aoife MacMurchada is just 14 years old when her father Diarmit, King of Leinster, is brutally deposed, and her family is forced to flee Southern Ireland into English exile. Diarmit seeks help from King Henry II, an alliance that leads him to the charismatic Richard de Clare, lord of Striguil, a man dissatisfied with his lot and open to new horizons. Diarmit promises Richard wealth, lands, and Aoife's hand in marriage in return for his aid, but Aoife has her own thoughts on the matter. She may be a prize, but she is not a pawn, and she will play the game to her own advantage.

Lacks Tension and Character Development
Reviewed: 09-16-24
While parts of this were great--starting and ending with excellent tension--much of the middle was just one summary to another. Major events and the danger posed to the characters were told or skimmed past. The sister-in-law made an unexpected change in demeanor near the end, feeding the much-needed tension later in the book. But she didn't start out that way, and we saw little progression toward it along the way. I was disappointed. The author has great writing skill, but didn't put it to best use on this book.

Jess needs a fresh start. She’s broke and alone, and she’s just left her job under less than ideal circumstances. Her half-brother Ben didn’t sound thrilled when she asked if she could crash with him for a bit, but he didn’t say no, and surely everything will look better from Paris. Only when she shows up – to find a very nice apartment, could Ben really have afforded this? – he’s not there.

Great performances; Implausible story

I love a mystery, but make it reasonable believable. I don’t hate the book, but there were aspects of the story, especially the ending that just made the characters seem ridiculous.

So much potential

The characters were compelling, especially Ann in the beginning. But… the story itself kind of pancaked toward the end with flimsy devices designed to simply tie it up and attempt to explain it.
