About this listen

From the New York Times best-selling author and master of “bone-chilling suspense” (People) comes another pause-resisting look inside one family’s past as buried secrets threaten to come to light.

Gifted musician Clemency Thompson is playing for tourists on the streets of Southern France when she receives an urgent text message. Her childhood friend, Lucy, is demanding her immediate return to London.

It’s happening, says the message. The baby is back.

Libby Jones was only six months old when she became an orphan. Now 25, she’s astounded to learn of an inheritance that will change her life. A gorgeous, dilapidated townhouse in one of London’s poshest neighborhoods has been held in a trust for her all these years. Now, it’s hers.

As Libby investigates the story of her birth parents and the dark legacy of her new home, Clemency and Lucy are headed her way to uncover, and possibly protect, secrets of their own. What really happened in that rambling Chelsea mansion when they were children? And are they still at risk?

Jewell’s novels have been praised as “sure to please fans of Ruth Ware and A.J. Finn” (Library Journal), and her latest is no exception. The Family Upstairs will keep you guessing until the very end.

Every neighborhood has a story. It could be the tragedy that took place years ago, or maybe an urban legend about that creepy house down the street. Or perhaps it's the new couple on the block who seem to be hiding something. These tales of suspense and mystery are what drive the popularity of the fastest growing subgenre of thrillers: the domestic thriller. We’ve made this list to help you choose the best domestic thriller audiobooks out there.

Editor's Pick

Agatha Christie would be proud
"On the heels of her haunting thriller, Watching You, Lisa Jewell unveils another engrossing listen, set in London and France, about a mysterious trio of deaths in a once-posh townhouse and devastating family secrets that have lasting consequences. The Family Upstairs is told from the perspectives of three integral characters, performed brilliantly by Tamaryn Payne, Bea Holland, and Dom Thornburn, whose lives are connected in ways that are slowly unraveled. The shocking twists in this story had me gasping IRL more than once, and the themes—particularly the fragility and resilience of children who’ve experienced trauma, for better or worse—stayed with me for days after."

OutStanding

One of my top 5 books of the year. I wanted to read it again as soon as I finished. The sacrifices we make for our families are always great but none as monumental as Henry and Lucy, made for each other. This book shows how grifters can take over a family and cause so much damage it takes 25 years to recover. not to mention the damage done to their own families. I recommend this book and warn you wont be able to put it down

Torn

The premise for the story was a bit lackluster, but the author's style was so captivating and enjoyable to listen to. Jewell has a unique way of seeing the world and the people in it.

Superior In Every Way

I was shocked when I saw the number of negative reviews for this book.
From page one, I was interested, invested in the story, and wanted to know more.
Then, as multiple characters are introduced (and these characters are ALL exceedingly well developed)the story becomes more dynamic and its depth grows.
I fell in love with the performance by Dom Thornburn and found that each performer went to great lengths to really portray these characters, rather then just reading lines.
All of these performers are outstanding and give these characters life.
My singular complaint is that it is NOT a mystery and should not be described or sold as such.
I am a huge fan of LJ and have purchased all of her books. I just wanted real mystery.
I often feel mislead, about half way through I’m thinking “ ok WHERE is the mystery to solve?”
I don’t know if it’s audible or it’s just a punishing company ploy but, the cast majority of her stuff could not possibly be considered mystery.
I love all (most) of her work and will always read her books, it’s just important that they are classified appropriately.
This story was phenomenal and loved it.
Lisa Jewell is a rare talent and I look forward to some new material soon...

Unbelievable in the Best Way

I didn't know what I was getting when I chose this book from audible. I knew I get a psychological thriller but nothing like this. I loved it!

the pace, the characters, the slow reveals, all of it. The performances were also quite strong, and multiple readers helped to organize my interpretation of things. The small real-life considerations add to it, making it all seem that much more believable.

Make sure you can listen somewhat closely, while every word isn't necessary to understand the story the characters and their idiosyncrasies end up becoming important.

and Dido is my favorite, but I have no idea if that's even a real name or how to spell it.

Hits the spot for British mystery

An entertaining tale of mystery with multiple narrators. I listened to The Silent Patient and wanted to keep up the streak.

Mesmerizing!

I bought this book for my book club, pushed play to make sure the quality was okay the day I got it (since I don't need to read it until next month). I literally finished it the same day! It's a wild ride. Lots of unexpected twists and turns, well developed characters and plot. I really enjoyed this story. Highly recommend!
