Story
What if you died, only to wake up in a new body, in a world where magic is real and battles are fought like in a video game? That's what happens to James Thompson, who finds himself reincarnated as Talon Nightstrider, a young man with a destiny to become a powerful member of the Blackfang Guild. But Talon is not just any member; he is connected to the System, an advanced interface that displays his stats and powers, and allows him to level up like in an RPG.

If you are new to the genre then this is an ok listen, i guess. However anyone with even a grain of experience with litrpgs or rpgs in general will find the first 4 hours of tutorial a real slog. Those above the age of 10 will find all characters 1 dimensional and all interactions predictable and hollow. Narrators did their best to breath life into this and for that i applaud them.

Travis Delivers as always but i do not feel the same about the book. It was slow and even worst, uninteresting. This entire book could be summarized as a side quest about a douchebag aristocratic town bully bothering the MC and crew just because he can. It was honestly tiresome to listen to. I constantly had to rewind chapters due zoning out while listening. There was very little character developement and what growth there was, barely matters. Even the power ups were so miniscule i cant understand why the author bothered. Not sure what everyone else was listening to but good on them for enjoying this. I sadly could not.

Travis Baldree did fantastic as always. The story was well written, the magic system was interesting, but... i got bored. I feel this first book was mostly set up. Things happened in the last 2 hrs but by then the book was mostly background noise for me. Still, now that the framework is done i am hoping book 2 will be what i am looking for.

Decent addition to the series. Narrator wasnt bad
Reviewed: 07-23-21
New narrator does an admirable job, but the sudden change in voices can be jarring at first. Todd brought the characters to life and did such a good job that his voice portrayal is part of their identities. Its like how we can hear our own family members talking in a crowd without having to see them. Their voices are a core part of how we know them. Still, after about 2-3 hrs i got used to the new voices and it stopped being a concern.
If the option to wait for Todd was available, that would of been the better option but Neil is good enough for me.

My Honest Review
Reviewed: 10-20-20
The negative reviews about the amount of training confuse me. Perhaps they meant to review book 5? Just to be sure, this review is for Book 6 - Transcendence.
In my opinion, books 1 and 2 are still the strongest. Book 5 is the weakest and this book along with 3-4 are in between. Enjoyable and worth picking up. i look forward to Book 7.
ill try to be vague enough not to spoil the story too much but try to be informative about this book... however for safety ill throw out a SPOILER WARNING here.
First 5 hrs - ch 1 to 18 consist of past life memories and new characters introduced and quickly forgotten. There is also some interactions between Tess and Arthur. One big battle and One boss fight with little forward progress on the story and war.
2nd 5 hrs - ch 19 to 39 consist of more past memories then Arthur doing some recon. Followed by recovery, more memories, a party and then another mission. During the mission theres another boss fight. Then more past life memories follow after the fight.
Last 5 hrs - Ch 40 - 55 have meetings, a new invention and heres where the training comes in. That lasts from ch 42 to 53 with a pretty interesting duel at ch 48. Afterwards theres another party followed by a cliffhanger.
Overall, training took up maybe 30%, flashbacks to the previous life was around 20%, Forward progess on the war and story was possibly 10 - 15%, with the rest filled with location descriptions, battles, boss fighting, and character interactions. im sure ive glossed over some things and forgotten others but thats what i got for you.

Pretty good narration and decently written but the story was fairly "Meh". The MC was mostly useless and boring with the side characters being the true stars of this book. I suppose this is an ok introduction to a litrpg series but ill be moving onto some others first before possibly coming back around to this one.
