Story
Richard Papen had never been to New England before his 19th year. Then he arrived at Hampeden College and quickly became seduced by the sweet, dark rhythms of campus life—in particular by an elite group of five students, Greek scholars, worldly, self-assured, and at first glance, highly unapproachable. Yet as Richard was accepted and drawn into their inner circle, he learned a terrifying secret that bound them to one another...a secret about an incident in the woods in the dead of night where an ancient rite was brough to brutal life...and lead to a gruesome death.

The author did a terrible disservice to the book by narrating it herself. I ended up quitting the audiobook after two hours and bought the book to read. It’s beautifully written, but incredibly dark. It would have been a much better book had it been two hundred pages shorter.

Story
Daniel leads a rich life and considers himself to be a mostly lucky guy - despite the fact that he’s suffered from a debilitating disease since he was a small child, one that has left him unable to speak or to move without a wheelchair. Largely confined to his home, Daniel spends the hours he’s not online communicating with irate air travelers observing his neighborhood from his front porch. One young woman passes by so frequently that spotting her out the window has almost become part of his daily routine. Until the day he’s almost sure he sees her being kidnapped.

Strike has never tackled a cold case before, let alone one 40 years old. I never thought I would be this sad to finish a 927 page/32 hour book. Strike and Robin are such lovable characters that you never want their story to end! The narrator is the best I’ve ever heard, he does a remarkable job changing for the different characters.

Story
When Edward Cullen and Bella Swan met in Twilight, an iconic love story was born. But until now, fans have heard only Bella's side of the story. At last, listeners can experience Edward's version in the long-awaited companion novel, Midnight Sun. This unforgettable tale as told through Edward's eyes takes on a new and decidedly dark twist. Meeting Bella is both the most unnerving and intriguing event he has experienced in all his years as a vampire.

Missed the Mark
Reviewed: 12-12-20
I so enjoyed the Twilight series for exactly what it is, entertaining escapism. However, Midnight Sun completely missed the mark. The book was far too long, almost doubling that of Twilight (it took Edward twice as long to tell his side of the story). I’ve always been team Edward, but hearing the story from his point of view made him seem obsessive and not in a good way, it ruined the love story between him and Bella. Also, the narrator, while he has a nice voice and did a good job, was the wrong voice for Edward. He was much too old sounding for the character he portrayed and that only added to the creepiness of Edward in this version. Stephanie has a gift for story telling (read the Host if you haven’t done so yet - great!), but this story only hindered the series. I suggest skipping it and rereading the originals!

During the languid days of the Christmas break, a group of 30-something friends from Oxford meets to welcome in the New Year together, a tradition they began as students 10 years ago. For this vacation, they’ve chosen an idyllic and isolated estate in the Scottish Highlands - the perfect place to get away and unwind by themselves. They arrive on December 30, just before a historic blizzard seals the lodge off from the outside world. Two days later, on New Year’s Day, one of them is dead.

Story
On an island off the coast of Ireland, guests gather to celebrate two people joining their lives together as one. The groom: handsome and charming, a rising television star. The bride: smart and ambitious, a magazine publisher. It’s a wedding for a magazine or for a celebrity: the designer dress, the remote location, the luxe party favors, the boutique whiskey. The cell phone service may be spotty and the waves may be rough, but every detail has been expertly planned and will be expertly executed.

I enjoyed all aspects of this audiobook. It was almost as if I was listening to a game of Clue! Lucy’s structure of moving between the timelines and characters was easy to follow, which is not always the case with this format. The different voices for the narrators added a layer of distinction. Overall a quick and fun read with many possibilities and motives!
