Story
The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman has sold over a million copies nationwide since its publication in 1971, making the fictional character of Miss Jane so real many people don’t know she exists only in the imagination of Louisiana-born author Ernest J. Gaines. Miss Jane is 100 years old when she is interviewed by an area high school teacher looking to teach his students more about plantation society in the Deep South. Her story is not only a vivid picture of the South before the dawn of the civil rights era, but also a story of one woman’s survival against overwhelming odds.

Such a good, heartbreaking read.

To see through the eyes of Jane Pittman is to see all of the destruction from slavery to the Civil Rights Era. The ending made me cry. Several part made me cry. It’s told with such a straightforward voice, matter-of-fact. There is no sentimentality. Or rose-colored glasses. Just honesty.

Story
In November 1999, Joan Didion began seeing a psychiatrist because, as she wrote to a friend, her family had had “a rough few years.” She described the sessions in a journal she created for her husband, John Gregory Dunne. For several months, Didion recorded conversations with the psychiatrist in meticulous detail. The initial sessions focused on alcoholism, adoption, depression, anxiety, guilt, and the heartbreaking complexities of her relationship with her daughter, Quintana. The subjects evolved to include her work, which she was finding difficult to maintain for sustained periods.

It is a look into a mother-daughter relationship hindered by addiction. It’s sad but very matter of fact, straightforward, in true Joan Didion way.

In this exquisitely written book, Robert Macfarlane sets off from his Cambridge, England, home to follow the ancient tracks, holloways, drove roads, and sea paths that crisscross both the British landscape and its waters and territories beyond. The result is an immersive, enthralling exploration of the ghosts and voices that haunt old paths, of the stories our tracks keep and tell, and of pilgrimage and ritual. Told in Macfarlane’s distinctive voice, The Old Ways folds together natural history, cartography, geology, archaeology, and literature.

It’s Depressing
Reviewed: 02-24-25
I found Kate narrator annoying. The horrible things happening to these women is darker and heavier than what should be cathartic. Also, there are very few good men, and I could see how people would be turned off by that. It’s about the abuse of women, so I understand why, but it makes it grating and the women seem hollow as if they can be nothing but victims. They are very static. And that’s what made me sad. There was not a depth to them other than being victims. Except for Altha, who I enjoyed the most.

It is sad and the characters are complex. I don’t like the infusion of COVID only because so many of remember the trauma of it. I think that’s just because even though those were quiet days, we also knew the world had crashed then too. And maybe that’s the thing I don’t like.

This was a very thorough biography, and though Joan’s life was so very much to plow through, it didn’t get boring because of the many different historical and political stories that Joan told and those that intertwined with her life. Great book.
