About this listen

"His perfect indifference, and your pointed dislike, make it so delightfully absurd!"

Pride and Prejudice has delighted generations of readers with its unforgettable cast of characters, carefully choreographed plot, and a hugely entertaining view of the world and its absurdities. With the arrival of eligible young men in their neighbourhood, the lives of Mr and Mrs Bennet and their five daughters are turned inside out and upside down. Pride encounters prejudice, upward-mobility confronts social disdain, and quick-wittedness challenges sagacity, as misconceptions and hasty judgements lead to heartache and scandal, but eventually to true understanding, self-knowledge, and love. In this supremely satisfying story, Jane Austen balances comedy with seriousness, and witty observation with profound insight. If Elizabeth Bennet returns again and again to her letter from Mr Darcy, readers of the novel are drawn even more irresistibly by its captivating wisdom.

excellent reading

Lindsey Duncan, the English actress, does a fine job in this reading. Her Elizabeth is not pert or flirty, but intelligent and witty. You can see why Darcy is so taken with her. Duncan is good with all the women, differentiating their language and intonation. This is the one to listen to!

Definitely worth it!

Loved the book (of course), and LOVED the narrator. Ms. Duncan does a fabulous job of giving each character a distinct vocal quality, which is very important in this book particularly, as Jane Austen tends to leave off speaker tags on her dialogue. HIGHLY recommended!

There's nothing I could add to review this book that hasn't already been said of it. A beautiful love story.

Never thought I'd enjoy Austen...

...but boy was I wrong! Lindsay Duncan's reading brings the characters and wit to life. Her pacing is perfect and gave all the right inflections. I found myself laughing out loud in parts and becoming attached to to Eliza Bennett. Totally changed my prejudices against classics of this period. Shame Ms. duncan hasn't read any of her others.

The best book ever written!

I just love Lindsay Duncan! I have always loved her in movies and she has done a fabulous job of bringing new life and energy to a most beloved book. I come back to it time and time again and will never get tired of it. Jane Austen was an amazing writer! Her use of language and description of characters and emotion are, in my opinion, unparalleled even 200 years later.

Definitely Jane Austen

Jane Austen is incredibly difficult to read. The audio book accompanying the paper copy of the book made it much easier to not get lost in Jane's unique "3rd person" type narrative.

Loved every moment...from start to finish.

Even though I'm quite familiar with the work it was so welcome to hear it narrated in a voice other than my own in my head. It allowed me the opportunity to create images for the events as they unfolded.

Distinctive, pleasant voice artist

Before I purchased this version of Pride and Prejudice, I listened to the samples of the several iterations offered on Audible. I found some of the voice artists did not have a distinguished narration voice, and many emphasized their view of the sample character (Mrs. Bennet) a bit too much. Some gave Mrs. Bennet a constant high pitch squeal while others offered a jittery mother's energy. I'm not saying they were wrong to do so. However as there are many annoying characters in this story, having to listen to the most egregious interpretations was something I knew I was not going to handle well. Yet when I got to this book's sample, Lindsay Duncan's approach to narration was deep and calming and a refined--exactly what I was hoping for. In addition, the interpretation of Mrs. Bennet hinted at her challenging qualities contextually, and in a nuanced fashion, making it more likely for me to be able to stomach without losing the point. It worked. This was a fine reading and a solid interpretation. I feel the more dignified for having listened to it. Thank you.
