Alison Fragale PhD
About this listen
Behavioral scientist Alison Fragale offers powerful new insights and a practical playbook for women to advance in any workplace, full of tips, tricks, and strategies to help secure that elusive corner office.
Over decades of research, speaking engagements, and mentorship, psychologist and professor Alison Fragale encountered recurring questions from high powered and early career women alike: How do women thread the needle of kindness and competence in the workplace? How can women earn credit for their accomplishments, negotiate better, and navigate complex office politics without losing the goodwill of their peers?
Fragale investigated and determined that many women's workplace issues boil down to what psychologists call status: the perception of them by others. No amount of power—no degree, title, or paycheck—will raise a woman's workplace stature unless it also affects how others see her. Acknowledging this roadblock, Fragale pulls back the curtain on how we can change how others see us by developing our standing as a "likeable badass." By cultivating perceptions of warmth and assertiveness, women can achieve the kind of reputation that leads to a seat at the table and a fulfilling career path.
Likeable Badass is equal parts behavioral science and life hacks, weaving together rigorous research with actionable advice and impactful stories from a diverse array of women. This is a warm, heartening book written for women, their allies, and anyone who struggles to rise, and wants evidence-based, practical strategies for success, served with a side of inspiration and humor.

Story
The No Club started when four women, crushed by endless to-do lists, banded together to get their work lives under control. Working harder than ever, they still trailed behind their male colleagues. And so, they vowed to say no to requests that pulled them away from the work that mattered most to their careers. Their over-a-decade-long journey and subsequent, groundbreaking research reveals that women everywhere are unfairly burdened with “non-promotable work,” a tremendous problem we can—and must—solve.

If you grew up with an emotionally immature, unavailable, or selfish parent, you may recall your childhood as a time when your emotional needs were not met or dismissed—and you may have lingering feelings of anger, loneliness, betrayal, and abandonment. As an adult, you have fought hard to establish your own sense of self, and heal the wounds caused by your upbringing. But what about other emotionally immature people (EIP) in your life? As an adult child of an emotionally immature parent (ACEIP), you may be particularly vulnerable to EIPs.

It’s become fashionable to argue that free will is a fiction: that we humans are in the thrall of animal urges and unconscious biases and only think that we are choosing freely. Kennon Sheldon argues that this perception is not only wrong but also dangerous. Drawing on decades of his own research, Sheldon shows us that embracing the ability to choose our path in life makes us happier, healthier, and more fulfilled. He also shows that this insight can help us choose better goals—ones that are concordant with our values and we’re more likely to actually see through.

Story
What if every time you had a self-critical thought, you heard it in a man’s voice? The truth is not far off. Living in a patriarchy, women absorb a lifetime of messages that say your worth is defined by your looks, your accomplishments, and how well you take care of everyone around you. In fact, these messages are so pervasive that, even knowing they exist, they still manage to program themselves into our brains. The result is that women end up feeling anxious, guilty, and vaguely ashamed of themselves no matter how much they do for others or achieve for themselves.

Women have been making strides towards equality for decades, or so we’re often told. They’ve been increasingly entering male-dominated areas of the workforce and consistently surpassing their male peers in grades, university attendance, and degrees. They’ve recently stormed the political arena with a vengeance. But despite all of this, the payoff is—quite literally—not there: the gender pay gap has held steady at about 20% since 2000. And the number of female CEOs for Fortune 500 companies has actually been declining.

Incredible. Useful, Needed, Written and narrated with skill and precision.
I’m only on chapter 4 but this book had me at chapter 1. It’s one of those books I know I’ll listen to again and again to keep learning and implementing.
I’m grateful to the author for her ongoing work on this important topic. These are concepts and strategies I’ve needed to hear my whole adult life and take action to improve—I just didn’t know it until I discovered Alison Fragale’s work and writing.

Very practical and interesting read about “status”
I loved the premise of women building your status in the workplace. This book made me realize status as something I myself have found success in but have never labeled it that way. I have new ideas on how to grow my techniques and feel a lot of confidence from this book. Some of the tips I felt were repetitive but likely it’s purposeful to drive the point.

This book is full of amazing advice you can practice right away. I thought I was being smart listening to it…but instead I ended up writing 14 pages (double sided) of notes. So much for me listening to it while doing other things. I’ll be buying a hard copy too.

A Game-Changing Guide to Authentic Confidence and Connection
This book is an absolute must-read for anyone who wants to embrace their authenticity, build genuine relationships, and confidently claim their seat at the table.
I loved the book's practical, actionable advice rooted in behavioral science and real-world experience. Alison doesn’t just tell you to "be confident" or "be authentic"; she shows you how, with clear strategies and examples that are easy to implement.
A standout moment in the book is Alison’s discussion on the balance between likability and authenticity. She offers a refreshing take on how to connect with others without compromising who you are. The idea of "owning your story" and highlighting unique traits—even the ones you might perceive as flaws—was a revelation for me. I found myself reflecting on moments where I tried too hard to "fit in," and now I feel empowered to lean into what makes me stand out instead.
The section on navigating workplace dynamics is also incredibly insightful. Alison provides an in-depth look at power versus status and how to cultivate influence across a company. Her framework for earning respect while staying approachable resonated deeply.
What I love most about this book is how empowering it feels. Alison’s voice is warm, relatable, and refreshingly honest. She doesn’t sugarcoat the challenges women face but equips readers with the tools and mindset to overcome them.
If you’re looking for a resource that combines research-backed insights with relatable anecdotes and actionable advice, Likable Badass is it. Thank you, Alison, for writing such an empowering and transformative book. I recommend this book to colleagues, friends, mentees, mentors, and anyone who’s ready to embrace their inner badass.
