Story
The starship Earthling, filled with thousands of hibernating colonists en route to a new world at Tau Ceti, is stranded beyond the solar system when the ship's three organic mental cores—disembodied human brains that control the vessel's functions—go insane. The emergency skeleton crew sees only one chance for survival: build an artificial consciousness in the Earthling's primary computer that can guide them to their destination—and hope it doesn't destroy the human race.

So much jargon that it's hard to be engaged.
Reviewed: 05-10-21
It's just too much jargon. When the ending finally happened I did not have the emotional tension of a regular story because the language was just to complicated.

Story
War heroes aren't usually called out of semi-retirement and sent to the far reaches of the galaxy for a routine investigation. So when Colonel Carl Butler answers the call from an old and powerful friend, he knows it's something big - and he's not being told the whole story. A high councilor's son has gone MIA out of Cappa Base, the space station orbiting a battle-ravaged planet. The young lieutenant had been wounded and evacuated - but there's no record of him having ever arrived at hospital command.

Story
Ever noticed that trying to calm down often produces more agitation? Or that real fulfillment can be elusive, despite living a successful life? Often, such difficulties stem from the human brain's hardwired tendency to seek pleasure and avoid pain. Modern science demonstrates that this survival mechanism served the needs of our earliest ancestors, but is at the root of many problems that we face today, such as depression, compulsive and addictive behaviors, chronic pain, and stress and anxiety.

Meditation for Skeptics

No Silver Bullet, No Blanket Promises, No Magic, No promise of happiness (Surprising). No promise of heaven.
For the Cynic, for those with self-loathing, for those who do not see an end to the pain and suffering. This is for those who had an impression of meditation for "Charismatics" "Saints" "Exceptional People" Wise People.
The lecture talks about actionable techniques, tiny achievable wins, and the framework to pursue the practice every day and at one's own pace.
I had a huge headache listening to this because it talked about attention while I was driving, walking and doing chores. I thought I was supposed to hold this frame of mind constantly, but its more like Exercise and Diet - that I achieve being healthy by having a period to Practice every day.
Life-changing for me, makes me a better parent, a better husband, a better son, and a better person. a better employee. etc... It doesn't make me any happier, but it makes me more grateful for what I have, but I'm able to feel and be aware of what each negative emotion brings and manage it better. The purpose of anger, frustration, sorrow, jelousy, etc... has more nuance and context and I'm not overwhelmed by guilt.

Tiffany can't avoid being funny: it's just who she is. But The Last Black Unicorn is so much more than a side-splittingly hilarious collection of essays - it's a memoir of the struggles of one woman who came from nothing and nowhere. A woman who was able to achieve her dreams by reveling in her pain and awkwardness, showing the world who she really is, and inspiring others through the power of laughter.
