Story
Arthur Leywin's quest for the power he knows only as Fate becomes even more pressing as his most dangerous foes gain a terrible new power. When the war between the dragons of Epheotus and the basilisks of Alacrya erupts across Dicathen, the people Arthur cares about most find themselves trapped in a clash of deities. The only way to master Fate and protect them, though, is to place them directly in harm's way in the ultimate gambit.

Definitely been on consistent decline for the past 2 books.
Reviewed: 05-30-25
Travis Baldree is, as is becoming more and more common, the saving grace of mediocrity. Less and less of a story every book, and more and more of MC spouting demands and beating everyone into his will. Getting sick of the MC’s interaction with pretty much anyone else. It has lost all of its excitement waiting between books and between listening sessions.

When a ghost ship is discovered, its crew presumed dead after trying to reach the storm-shrouded island Akina, Navani Kholin must send an expedition to make sure the island hasn't fallen into enemy hands. Knights Radiant who fly too near find their Stormlight suddenly drained, so the voyage must be by sea. Shipowner Rysn Ftori lost the use of her legs but gained the companionship of Chiri-Chiri, a Stormlight-ingesting winged larkin, a species once thought extinct. Now Rysn's pet is ill, and any hope for Chiri-Chiri’s recovery can be found only at the ancestral home of the larkin.

Travis Baldree keeps killing it!
Reviewed: 12-19-24
Baldree really does bring these characters to life. I have grown more and more disappointed with the story for the past few books. The author feels more and more lazy when it comes to how Jake seems to be able to do every “impossible” feat. That and the way he seems to be able to kill and overcome anything and everything. Anyway, Baldree’s story-telling talent keeps me coming back for more! Sorry aside, I enjoy hearing the banter portions, especially with Villie and Minaga.

The story itself is pretty good. The unreasonable plot armor for the characters makes everything boring though. I don’t think I can deal with another, “if this this this and that didn’t happen, I would be dead”.

Story
Reidon Ward's first semester at the Galens Institute hasn't been without reward. In just over half a year he's gone from the weakest cadet at school to one of the strongest in his class, and there's no one left who would argue that his Device, Shido, isn't the most terrifying CAD they've ever laid eyes on. Still, Rei knows that his climb has barely begun, like he knows that the true fight is only just starting. After all… The Sectionals tournament has arrived. Rei, along with Aria, Viv, Catcher, and a couple unexpected squadmates, are about to face the first real battle of their careers.

Strongly disappointing
Reviewed: 05-17-24
The story has tons of potential, especially after the knockout the first book was. Which is why this book was so damn disappointing. I spent the majority of the time comparing this book to a teen drama. I hoped it was just starting slowly, but it never stopped. It had some of the greatness sprinkled in that the first book showed which made it a little easier to listen to. Even the narrator’s performance got worse and changed the accent of some key characters that made it painful to listen to.

These last few books were a severe struggle for me. It started strong and then redundant and tedious. It has gotten to the point that I only care to listen to Hoshin and friend’s story. Will not continue this series.

The barebone of the story was pretty good. All the teenage drama and idealism got firmly on my nerves. The character voices from the narrator were also pretty bad.

I thought after barely making it through the first book that I would be able to actually get into this series. Outside of the humor parts, it’s just cringe worthy. After the intro of the first book, I thought I was going to love the MC, but it’s gotten to the point to where every word out of his mouth just makes me hate him more. The performance was good. The narrator was a bit over enthusiastic but he did well in my opinion.
