About this listen

London, 1817

A Bow Street Runner summons Captain Gabriel Lacey to a Berkeley Square ballroom where a young dandy was stabbed to death during a society ball. The prime suspect: Lacey's former commander, Colonel Brandon.

Instead of denying the charges, Colonel Brandon allows himself to be arrested and claims, to Lacey's shock, that the lady he'd stayed protectively near at the ball is his mistress. Lacey realizes that he is the only person not convinced of Brandon's guilt - all present, including Brandon's wife, believe that Brandon committed the murder.

Colonel Brandon's reticence to tell the truth proves to be Lacey's greatest obstacle in his race against time to prove Brandon's innocence. As Lacey's relationship with Lady Breckenridge moves forward, his hunt for evidence to clear Brandon uncovers dark secrets that go back to the Peninsular Wars and involve the origins of Lacey's and Brandon's private battle.

I hate the character Cologne Brandon and how he is narrated which is just awful.

Loved this book except

Well done mystery with plenty of side mysteries among the players. These are flawed people, which makes them interesting. A little too much drama from Colonel Brandon’s bullishness, but maybe that’s to be expected when looking at things from his point of view. I hope that aspect of this series evolves to some settling down of emotions. These stories are well developed, and I’ll definitely move on to the next one in the series.

Very good

This series gets better with each book. Lacy is a complicated but honorable man. Sometimes too much so, but great guy.

Wonderful story

I love this series! The different characters and suspects pull the story together.

Lacey is such a mix of honor and truth. Yes the very best!

Another Great one

Narrator is fantastic at putting and keeping you on the edge of your seat. His inflection and consistent character voices are a welcomed departure from some others. I found myself wincing and feeling nervous as if I were in a movie theater😁. Storyline will keep me coming back.

Would you consider the audio edition of A Body in Berkeley Square to be better than the print version?

Yes! James Gillies brings the characters and story to life, and adds another dimension to the wonderful storytelling.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

As we've come to expect with the Captain Lacey series, there are plenty of twists and surprises to keep you glued to the story. I would strongly encourage any new readers to start with the first book in the series and read them consecutively, as the recurring characters all develop in each book. Since this book focuses on Colonel and Louisa Brandon in particular, knowledge of their backstory and their relationship with Captain Lacey is especially important.

What about James Gillies’s performance did you like?

James Gillies is a phenomenal narrator. He is indispensable in the reading of this series. He has done a wonderful job narrating the previous books, but the dramatic nature of some of the scenes and character interactions in this book are especially well done.

Any additional comments?

I absolutely loved this book, and it is probably my favorite in the series so far. Ashley Gardner and James Gillies make a terrific author/narrator combo!

Another terrific installment in the series!

This series is so enjoyable and James Gillies is perfect as the narrator. Please hurry up with the next audio in the series. You are too far behind the books that have been released and I enjoy the narration too much to read them.

I love this series

read by James Gilles as always wonderfully portrayed.

The plot goes on for Captain Lacey, his ability to seek out and conquer puzzels , and solve crimes is very intruiging to listen too.
He can mix with the high and mighty of the land, while dealing with all kinds of lowley folk to solve the crimes.
Enjoyed this book thanks Ashley Granger and particularly out narrator for his performance here.

A body in the library by Ashley Gardener .

narrator always excellent. makes the story even more pleasurable to experience.
Lacey's former mentor Branden is arrested for murder. who Lacey discovers actually killed the man is someone close to Grenville; not someone in a familiar way but I'll let the reader discover the connection.

more insight into our Captain
