Publisher's summary

When you are calm, your mind and body are in a state of focused awareness. You are in your “zone”, performing at your peak. Now, in A Calm Brain, Dr. Gayatri Devi shows how you can cultivate this optimal mental and physical state by tapping into your body’s hard-wired natural relaxation system.

Our ancestors used the fight-or-flight mechanism to protect themselves from predators. We use it to fend off daily crises. In a world filled with too many toys, too much technology, and too many choices, how can we possibly keep up? Our bodies have been trained to react to the beeps and alarms of all our different technologies, be it the ever present cell phone, an angry text message, or a frantic voicemail. The result is chronic stress and a learned inability to relax.

With a warm, lucid voice, Dr. Devi shares stories from her medical practice of ordinary people suffering from migraines, neck pain, gastrointestinal upsets, and sleep deprivation, trying to work through life’s difficulties. With practical advice, she shows just how to promote a higher “vagal tone”, and delivers the best news yet: you don’t need more drugs. Here are the keys to a more tranquil, productive, and enjoyable life.

Dr. Devi explores a paradigm shift in our understanding of the brain’s relaxation mechanisms. It is hard for our brains to talk our bodies into feeling calm, but our bodies have strong wiring that makes true enduring calm possible. The body does this through the vagus nerve, a powerful conduit that taps directly into our brain’s built-in relaxation system. This revolutionary science can transform your work life and your home life.

Waste of money with almost no help in getting calm

Any additional comments?

Just a terrible book that not only didn't calm my brain, but was exceedingly good at keeping it upset. There's maybe....MAYBE 3% of this book that actually talks about developing a calm brain while the 97% of it is nothing but stats, experiments and comments about other peoples studies.WE ALL know to meditate okay, no one needs to buy a book to tell us that and standing on your head isn't always convenient like the book says, so that leaves us nothing to handle the stress I feel every single day.If you wish to read what happened to this 38 year old female, or that 67 year old male nurse in the U.K, then buy it, but if you actually want to get information that helps you relax and be or stay calm, forget it.
I read the whole book and never did find an answer to that, as well as not one chapter called anything even remotely close to...."here's how to get a calm brain."Totally and terribly disappointing. Not a good writer at all, and just another way to get our money I guess.
