About this listen

When Sadie Alexander’s employer dies, she knows she’ll need to leave the household. Mrs. Ludlow’s son has already made improper advances, and now it would be hard to avoid him. Desperate, she sees an ad in a newspaper for a bride, so she mails a hastily written letter and travels to California on a wagon train. Being an orphan, she has no family to turn to. If the offer isn’t still open or the man looks unsuitable, she’ll try to find a job there. However, when she arrives, Mr. Laird is away with his construction business, and his older friend has been left to meet her.

Sawyer Laird couldn’t believe that he finally got a response from his advertisement for a bride after all this time, and it couldn’t have come at a more inopportune time. He still has construction contracts he needs to fulfill in Placerville, a gold-mining town that is no place for a lady. Well, she would just have to wait a while. He sure hoped she’d be the understanding sort.

Getting off to a rocky start at their first meeting, they both begin to see the other’s point of view, agree to call a truce, and decide to start over. However, Sadie is still leery of this man who puts his business above his potential wife. She’s not sure she wants to live that kind of life.

Loved it!

What a fun clean story! Sadie fled to California to escape a man that wanted to make her his mistress. She found an article in the newspaper that a man wanted a mail-order-bride. She jumped at the chance to get away and headed out west. Then an adventure began. The narrator was great. She brought the story to life.

Lovely romance during simpler times

Sadie and Sawyer are willing to take their time as they work to follow God's leading. Initially Sadie feels like she is being ignored by her intended, but then she realizes how important it is to have a fiancee that feels it is important to honor his commitments rather than spend time with her since she did arrive in town unexpectedly.

Great book!

I listened to this one on audio. The narration was great. The story isn't your typical mail-order bride story. I like the different turn in this one. Also, the story itself once the bride arrives is unusual. I really enjoyed this book.

Loved this book

Another great story by Janice Cole Hopkins. Such an amazing author and the narrator was just as good. I love her books as most are short, easy listening/reading and make you feel as if your part of the story.

Sweet

I liked that this story was clean and obviously Christian. It seemed to be pretty historically accurate and I liked how the characters were portrayed. The narrator did a great job pacing her words and using different voices for all the characters, and her diction was very clear.

A Christmas Dream

Totally enjoyed listening to this book. Narrator was wonderful. A great read for the holidays. Sadie's employer passes on, but her son wants to keep Sadie as his mistress. Sadie wants no part of that and takes off for California to become a mail order bride. When she arrives, her intended, Sawyer, is off doing his job, but Sadie is still upset. It is getting frustrating, to wait for Sawyer and unwelcome advances from a man in town. She keeps praying that this will work out. It is Christmas after all. I was given a copy of this book by the author for an honest review.

Clean gentle Christian story

Sadie how’s no choice but to flee from her dead employers lascivious son. She goes to California as a mail order bride. The author is very careful to keep the story clean with no hints of impropriety. A gentle story of love.
