About this listen

It is every mama's dearest wish that her daughter marries well. But how to ensure that a seemingly earnest suitor is not merely a fortune hunter? Rosalind is involved in just such a case, discreetly investigating a client's prospective son-in-law, when she is drawn into another predicament shockingly close to home.

Rosalind's estranged father, Sir Reginald Thorne-a drunkard and forger-has fallen into the hands of the vicious scoundrel Russell Fullerton. Angered by her interference in his blackmail schemes, Fullerton intends to unleash Sir Reginald on society and ruin Rosalind. Before Rosalind's enemy can act, Sir Reginald is found murdered - and Fullerton is arrested for the crime. He protests his innocence, and Rosalind reluctantly agrees to uncover the truth, suspecting that this mystery may be linked to her other, ongoing cases.

Aided by her sister, Charlotte, and sundry friends and associates - including handsome Bow Street Runner Adam Harkness - Rosalind sets to work. But with political espionage and Napoleon loyalists in the mix, there may be more sinister motives, and far higher stakes, than she ever imagined....

Complex, but worth it!

This is my favorite Rosalind Thorne mystery so far. I've enjoyed all of them immensely but this this one was pleasingly complex to a greater degree than the previous books. I loved it!

Loved the Rosalind Thorne series!

I have to say that I’m sad to hear the last book in this series. I’ll miss listening to these characters’ stories. I enjoy this genre, mysteries set during historical periods. Ms. Wilde does an excellent job at character development and unraveling details within the historical setting. The narrators for this series have also been a pleasure to listen to. Now I have to find my next listen.

Exciting plot and character twists

My favorite story of the entire series. Interesting, well developed characters, exciting plot turns.
Likable story with clean language, although a bit of 21st century societal values is starting in creep in.

Marvelous, as always

I have loved every book in this series and Pearl Hewitt is an absolute joy to listen to. The storyline has more twists than a bowl of noodles with well developed characters. Bravo Ms. Wilde, you've done it again!

Well written and narrated!

These stories of life and behaviors in the late 1700's, I believe, are fascinating. Often time bordering on the rediculious compared to the behaviors of today. The insite and determination of young women on their own then have traveled through time riveling those who struggle today. The narrator was perfect! I've enjoyed the entire series so far.

Great story!

I have listened to all the Rosalind Thorne books and loved them all. This one was the best so far. I have enjoyed watching Rosalind develop as a character and the plot twists are always intriguing. This is my favorite narrator of the series, though all have done an excellent job in my opinion. This is a great series. I can’t wait for the next one.

Not completely culturally correct

I have really enjoyed this book series and have a lot of respect for the author. She weaves a captivating tale with believable characters and a complex plot. That said, I was baffled by her use of a random sounding name for the character who was supposed to be a Russian countess. How on earth does “Countess Lieven” sound Russian? If anything, it is more akin to German. A quick google search would have revealed that typical Russian names end in -ov, -ev, or -in (as in Borisov, Lebedev, Putin). Also, bliny are not little cakes, but a Russian version of crepes.
Other than that, the book was enjoyable.

Love the series…

But This is not my favorite story in the series…a couple of the threads in the story line felt “icky” to me. I enjoy coming back to these characters and seeing them evolve.
