About this listen

Art restorer and sometime spy Gabriel Allon is sent to Vienna to authenticate a painting, but the real object of his search becomes something else entirely: to find out the truth about the photograph that has turned his world upside down. It is the face of the unnamed man who brutalized his mother in the last days of World War II, during the Death March from Auschwitz. But is it really the same one? If so, who is he? How did he escape punishment? Where is he now?

Fueled by an intensity he has not felt in years, Allon cautiously begins to investigate, but the more layers he strips away, the greater the evil that is revealed, a web stretching across sixty years and thousands of lives. Soon, the quest for one monster becomes the quest for many. And the monsters are stirring....

Filled with sharply etched characters and prose, and a plot of astonishing intricacy, this is an uncommonly intelligent thriller by one of our very best writers.

Please note: This is the abridged edition. An unabridged version is also available.

Good story

Good story - please no more background music - it’s hard to listen to narrator and very irritating - the stories are so good, they don’t need this. Thank goodness it was only at the beginning and end.

Abridged version

So disappointed that I didn't look carefully. Never disappointed in Daniel Silva, but abridged versions always disappoint, more so it the author is one of my favorites

Fascinating Tale

An intricate, believable plot, combined with a powerful telling of horrors of the Nazi holocaust. Should not be missed

Awesome as usual

Enjoyed Silvia’s book as I like all his books. Intrigue, different countries were used. The plot was believable.

Boring

From the description, I thought it would be interesting, but I was disappointed. While there are good/evil characters, I found myself not liking any of them or rooting for any of them. And there is basically no suspense...no surprises. The problem is that the good characters are too good...they have no flaws...they are perfect and nothing bad happens to them. Most children's books will have more ups/downs than this story. I have listened to several audio books and this is one I liked the least. Narration was good so I give one star for that.
