About this listen

At eighteen, Emmeline Ballentine’s father splashed out on one London season to introduce his daughter to polite society. Sadly, for Emmeline, polite society was not terribly receptive to a city trader’s daughter.

She only ever caught one gentleman’s fancy, the dishonorable Jeremy Vance who made her head spin as he singled her out for attention at the balls and assemblies. Her worldly chaperone warned her he was making a May game of her, but Emmeline had not heeded her warning. Consequently, her dreams were dashed, when at the close of the season, Jeremy announced his engagement to another.

Ten years later, their paths cross again in Bath. Emmeline is older and wiser, and a good deal poorer, and Jeremy is divorced. There is absolutely no chance of him making a fool of her again with his shocking offer of marriage. Is there?

A Foolish Flirtation is a stand alone romance set in Victorian England. It is over 130,000 words long. Please do not purchase if you are offended by strong language and or sex scenes.

First, the narrator. She needs some getting used to, because she's undoubtedly a little too "breathy", but I found that I love her voices and how she made them all very different.
What can I say about the book? I'm a HUGE Alice Coldbreath's fan and I really loved how she redeemed Jeremy in my eyes. And she's also the only author who keeps me entertained through pages of decor choosing and walks and Greek mythology and household stuff! Angst and humor perfectly mixed, a real treat!

Great book!

The book is fantastic, which is not surprising. The voice actress doesn't seem to have a large catalogue. She was absolutely wonderful, particularly with the voice of the young son Toby. This might be one of the best done audiobooks I have ever heard. I hope she gets more work because I would love to listen to more of her.

AMAZING voice acting

I love how A.C. builds character arcs and takes her time to get you invested in each character and their inner turmoil and suppressed feelings. I just knew Jeremy's story would be a great one. I love how he really enjoyed watching her, being around her, talking with her, dancing with her, reading and discussing books with her and also how he included Pinky in everything. This was a truly sweet story ❤️

beautiful storyline

I didn't like the narration. I think if Carmen Rose was used it wouldn't have taken me so long to figure out who the characters were. The narration itself was odd. I would never listen to a book with that narrator again. It took away from the whole story.

I loved that it was a new series with familiar characters.

As always, Alice Coldbreath delivers: exceptional character development, an impeccable sense of time and style of the era, and a firm hand on the rein with pacing. Unfortunately, I don’t believe the narrator complements the style of the novel. Alice Coldbreath is a master of highlighting and dramatization of disparate characters meeting and finding common ground. The prude and the scoundrel. The innocent and the jaded. Beauty and the Beast.

In previous narrated books with Anne Flosnik or Carmen Rose, you have a partner in playing up the juxtaposition and journey of the different characters. Each of these narrators have an incredible range and really complement the work.

Unfortunately, Abigail Langham’s range is sadly limited. She has a whispery youthful and feminine voice that isn’t unpleasant, it just doesn’t really go anywhere. Of note, she could not bring Jeremy (MC) to life and I found that many nuances of humor and substance that are characteristic of this author were missed. Perhaps it is simply her lack of experience, but I find that she is just not a good fit for an author of this style and caliber. I purchase all of Alice Coldbreath’s books as well as the audiobooks, but sadly will not be purchasing further books from this narrator.

Another excellent story from Alice Coldbreath, narrator not up to snuff
