About this listen

Following a devastating series of misfortunes, Lady Aribella Bardsley has bravely shouldered the responsibilities of her household. But just as the bleakness of her situation threatens to overwhelm her, a summons arrives from the Queen with a providential offer: Aribella’s presence is requested as a lady-in-waiting at the palace.

Prince Layton Wilhelm’s family has clung to their neutrality in the war for far too long. As the youngest of the King of Oldenburg’s eight sons, Layton is determined to prove his worth and is unwilling to turn a blind eye to Napoleon’s encroaching privateers. When Layton embarks on a journey to England, it is for one purpose: to petition the British navy for aid. But when he becomes acquainted with the lovely Lady Aribella, he cannot deny their powerful connection. Amid the intrigues and schemes within the walls of the palace, Layton and Aribella know a future together is impossible - but torn between loyalty and love, will they risk everything to follow their hearts?

Engaging Author

This is the second time I have listened to this book.
I loved the romantic tension between the two main characters and the glimpse into the life of a royal.
Jen Geigle Johnson has the ability to draw the reader in. I have read many of her books and live them all.
Luone Ingram is my favorite narrator. She brings the characters to life and her voice is pleasing to listen too.
Check this book out you won’t be sorry.

A Beautiful story rich with history

I always love Jen Geigle Johnson’s books, as they are well-researched, and equally, well-crafted. Not surprisingly, this was no exception. I enjoyed the glimpse into the courts of King George III, and loved getting to “know” Queen Charlotte. But most importantly, the love story Johnson wove together is so much fun. It kept me guessing to the very end as to how and if everything would work out for Lady Arabella and Prince Lleyton. It was so rich with conflict and obstacles, the odds seemed almost insurmountable at times. As a note specific to audiobooks, the narrator does a wonderful job telling this story. Her narration adds to the story in a perfect way.

Ms Jen has brought this part of history to life!

I enjoyed listening to this Audible version of this regency era story. Ms Jen has brought to life the English court’s political machinations especially during the time of King George lll and Queen Charlotte. I appreciated the research she gathered in order to bring this story to life. I loved the romance between Aribella and Layton. I could feel their angst as their relationship was frowned upon by the Queen since she wanted him to court one of her daughters. I loved how things worked out for them in the end. I intend to listen to this once again and savor it more fully. I appreciated the narrator and her many voices. She read it clearly and at an even pace so the story was easy for me to absorb. I would definitely recommend this story to anyone.
