About this listen

A Free Woman on God's Earth is the story of Elizabeth "Mumbet" Freeman, the enslaved African woman who had the courage and conviction to speak what was in her heart, suing for her freedom in a Massachusetts court of law. In gaining her own freedom, she set the stage for the abolition of slavery in Massachusetts in 1783.

I really enjoyed the audio version of "A Free Woman on God's Earth" by Jana Laiz and Ann-Elizabeth Barnes. The narration by Adenrele Ojo was beautifully, clearly and thoughtfully done. Even though I had read the book previously, to hear it I feel as though I learned much more. The authors give Mumbet a voice that shows her courage, wisdom and love of life with an unwaivering determination to be free from slavery. The other characters all came alive as well making the story-telling of this important historical turning point well worth listening to.

This was short but sweet. I hope to hear more about Mumbet in some other readings.
