About this listen

Jonathan Edwards is one of the most extraordinary figures in American history. Arguably the most brilliant theologian ever born on American soil, Edwards (1703 - 1758) was also a pastor, a renowned preacher, a missionary to the Native Americans, a biographer, a college president, a philosopher, a loving husband, and the father of 11 children.

George M. Marsden - widely acclaimed for his magisterial large study of Edwards - has now written a new, shorter biography of this many-sided, remarkable man. A Short Life of Jonathan Edwards is not an abridgment of Marsden's earlier award-winning study but is instead a completely new narrative based on his extensive research. The result is a concise, fresh retelling of the Edwards story, rich in scholarship yet compelling and readable for a much wider audience, including students.

Great introduction to Jonathan Edwards, listened to the whole book over a couple days. Engaging and wasn’t dry like some biographies can be.

Terrific book and well narrated

Don't know why anyone would not like this book if they want to learn about Jonathan Edwards. It's written by a true authority on Edwards, and Grover Gardners narration is very easy to listen to. I learned a lot.

Informative, historical

A biography of Edwards and a historical bio of the growing pains of religion and Christianity in the New World.

Excellent!

Great narration of a great life story! I especially appreciated the author's use of other famous people during Edwards' time period (like Benjamin Franklin and George Whitefield) to illustrate the wider culture in which Edwards lived. And I especially enjoyed the background on Edwards' ministry to the American Indians.

Excellent study of Edwards' Life

George Marsden has written a very accessible and engaging study of the life of Jonathan Edwards. I very much enjoyed and appreciated this book. Marsden has given us a very professional job as a historian while touching on all the interesting aspects of Edwards's life that I would have wanted to know more about. I found it a great listen and very highly recommend it.

One of the most important biographies

The author struck an exemplary balance between sympathy for a man's philosophy clearly coming from a deep understanding of the man and his religion, with a historian's objectivity that makes this book appeal to any audience.
