About this listen

A parent’s love letter to a daughter who has always known exactly who she is.

One ordinary day, a caseworker from the Department of Children and Families knocked on the Hays family’s door to investigate an anonymous complaint about the upbringing of their transgender child. It was this knock, this threat, that began the family’s journey out of the Bible Belt but never far from the hate and fear resting at the nation’s core.

Self-aware and intimate, A Girlhood asks us all to love better, not just for the sake of Hays’s child but for children everywhere enduring injustice and prejudice just as they begin to understand themselves. A Girlhood is a call to action, an ode to community, a plea for empathy, a hope for a better future. A Girlhood is a love letter to a child who has always known exactly who she is—and who is waiting for the rest of the world to catch up.

Insightful and Genuine

This book was insightful, “religious”, educational, genuine and loving. It educated me on the differences between trans and other people labeled LGBTQ. It dove into examples of transgender people throughout history, Biblical inference and political attitudes towards transgender, and the inhumane treatment of people who do not meet certain socioeconomic norms. However, most importantly it is a joyful example of the love and acceptance of God, a mother, father and extended family towards a child.

Well done, Mom. And thank you. I am all the wiser for having listened to this book!

I recommend this book for anyone who is confused or doesn’t understand how someone can be transgender. If you struggle with concentrating on non-fiction as I do, listen to it on Audible while you’re driving/traveling, doing chores around the house or just sitting still. It is well worth your time.

Beautiful

These parents are quick to accept and do whatever it takes to support their transgender child. Those who have doubts would benefit in reading.
