About this listen

Covering American transgender history from the mid-20th century to today, Transgender History takes a chronological approach to the subject of transgender history, with each chapter covering major movements, writings, and events. Chapters cover the transsexual and transvestite communities in the years following World War II; trans radicalism and social change, which spanned from 1966 with the publication of The Transsexual Phenomenon, and lasted through the early 1970s; the mid-'70s to 1990 - the era of identity politics and the changes witnessed in trans circles through these years; and the gender issues witnessed through the '90s and '00s.

Transgender History includes informative sidebars highlighting quotes from major texts and speeches in transgender history and brief biographies of key players, plus excerpts from transgender memoirs and discussion of treatments of transgenderism in popular culture.

a wonderful look at our deep and complex history. I highly recommend it for allies in particular who are looking to have a more comprehensive understanding of the scope of trans rights through the decades

A must read for trans folks and allies alike.

Loved this book for its deep dive into the history of trans folx in the United States. It's a wonderful asset for those transitioning and for those that wish to know more about the struggle for transgender rights. The narration was exceptional! The section on terms before the historical chapters helps guide the listener. Glad to have read this book!

Excellent!

The only book on trans history of which I am aware. Overall, it is pretty good. And the author's conclusion is well stated. It is US-centric. I would like to see more about third genders among insigenous peoples, and in societies such as India, where other genders are acknowledged while still being oppressed in the caste system. Yet, such topics are really beyond the scope of this book. As it is, this book belongs in the history section of all notable libraries.

3.5

This was a two-inch deep, mile-wide survey. Those are never my favorites. However, I admire how inclusive the author tried to be and the broad coverage in the book.

Good survey
