January 1921. Though the Great War is over, in Ireland a new civil war is raging. The once-grand Kilcolgan House, a crumbling bastion shrouded in sea mist, lies half empty and filled with ghosts, both real and imagined, while it shelters the surviving members of the Prendeville family. Then, when an IRA ambush goes terribly wrong, Maud Prendeville, Lord Kilcolgan’s eldest daughter, is killed, leaving the family reeling. Yet the IRA column behind the attack insists they left her alive, that someone else must be responsible for her terrible fate.

Is there something wrong with Ginette Cox? It’s what everyone seems to think. When a doctor suggests that what she might need is less excitement, she packs up and moves from New York City to a house in suburban NY: 19 Howard Ave. The town offers Ginette little in the way of entertainment in 1959, but at least she has interesting neighbors. Whether it’s the little girl with her doll or the couple and their mother-in-law, Ginette watches them from her window and makes up names and stories for them.

Opal is a lot of things—orphan, high school dropout, full-time cynic and part-time cashier—but above all, she's a determined to find a better life for her younger brother Jasper. One that gets them out of Eden, Kentucky, a town remarkable for only two things: bad luck and E. Starling, the reclusive nineteenth century author of The Underland, who disappeared over a hundred years ago. All she left behind were dark rumors—and her home. Everyone agrees that it’s best to ignore the uncanny mansion and its misanthropic heir, Arthur. Almost everyone, anyway.

Now reduced to a schoolyard chant, the Hope family murders shocked the Maine coast one bloody night in 1929. While most people assume seventeen-year-old Lenora was responsible, the police were never able to prove it. Other than her denial after the killings, she has never spoken publicly about that night, nor has she set foot outside Hope’s End, the cliffside mansion where the massacre occurred. It’s now 1983, and home-health aide Kit McDeere arrives at a decaying Hope’s End to care for Lenora after her previous nurse fled in the middle of the night.

Story
Elfland is an intimate, sensual novel of people—both human and Aetherial—caught between duty and desire. It is a story of families, and of Rose Fox, a woman born to magic but tormented by her place in her adopted world.Led by Auberon Fox, a group of Aetherials—call them the Fair Folk, if you will—live among us, indistinguishable from humans. Every seven years, on the Night of the Summer Stars, Lawrence Wilder, the Gatekeeper, throws open all gates to the Other World. But this time, something has gone wrong.

Very Enjoyable Listen
I truly enjoyed this book. I liked the paranormal element mixed with the period murder mystery. Both things I enjoy! The paranormal aspect wasn't overwhelming or too ghoulish. It was just right. I hope there will be more books about the same main characters.

War, love and ghosts
Excellent book and performance. I really hope there will be a second book with the main characters. The ghost part adds a gothic element of fear and unknown but it’s really a World War I , spy and love story. So enjoyable and touching in so many ways. Reminds me of Foyle’s War ( even though different World War), how everyone is affected by the war but must carry on.

Mystery with ghosts, not a ghost story
This book is slightly better than a cozy, and may become a series based on the ending. The review says very little about the story line, essentially, an early nineteenth century career woman is teamed up with an army officer to investigate spies who have infiltrated the British arms industry. While the mansion does have real ghosts, the story does not depend on a supernatural theme, it is more like the ghosts play a minor role in a cast of characters. Not sure why Agatha Christie was mentioned in some reviews, this is not Ten Little Indians. It is a refreshing change of pace. Worth a credit.

An enjoyable ghost and spy thriller
While not too complex, this is a very enjoyable and unusual period mystery. Combining WWI, spiritualism, actual ghosts and a good espionage-based mystery, it keeps you entertained. Great performance as well.
