About this listen

SOON TO BE A FEATURE FILM STARRING MARGARET QUALLEY AND THOMASIN MCKENZIE

Named one of the Most Anticipated Books of 2025 by Oprah Daily, Reader's Digest, Polygon, and Paste

“Simmering with rage, propulsive and laugh out loud funny, Victorian Psycho speaks profoundly of horror both within and without us.”—Catriona Ward

From the acclaimed author of Mrs. March comes the riveting tale of a bloodthirsty governess who learns the true meaning of vengeance.

Virginia Feito’s Mrs. March was hailed as “a brilliant debut … [by] a writer who keeps pace with the grandees she invokes” (Sarah Ditum, Guardian)—from Daphne Du Maurier and Shirley Jackson to Patricia Highsmith. Now, Feito returns with her “silver-polish sentences and her eerie psychological acumen” (Constance Grady, Vox) to unleash an entirely new antihero on us all.

Grim Wolds, England: Winifred Notty arrives at Ensor House prepared to play the perfect governess—she’ll dutifully tutor her charges, Drusilla and Andrew, tell them bedtime stories, and only joke about eating children. But long, listless days spent within the estate’s dreary confines come with an intimate knowledge of the perversions and pathetic preoccupations of the Pounds family—Mr. Pounds can’t keep his eyes off Winifred’s chest, and Mrs. Pounds takes a sickly pleasure in punishing Winifred for her husband’s wandering gaze. Compounded with her disdain for the entitled Pounds children, Winifred finds herself struggling at every turn to stifle the violent compulsions of her past. French tutoring and needlework are one way to pass the time, as is admiring the ugly portraits in the gallery … and creeping across the moonlit lawns. …

Patience. Winifred must have patience, for Christmas is coming, and she has very special gifts planned for the dear souls of Ensor House. Brimming with sardonic wit and culminating in a shocking conclusion, Victorian Psycho plunges listeners into the chilling mind of an iconic new literary psychopath.

What???

I don't know how to write about this book! It's exactly what the title says it is...a story in first person from Victoririans point of view! Intriguing, amusing at times, and a bit gruesome!

Surprisingly mordant

While this novel is not really for the squeamish, it stands as a remarkably acute satire of the Victorian Age. The narrator does a wonderful job of keeping the listener off guard.

The narrator really set the tone and made it delicious to listen to. The story was interesting and kept me engaged.

The most fun since I read Mary by Nat Cassidy

I've been looking for a book that compares to Mary by Nat Cassidy. It's comparable in it's female brutality and humor. The story line and characters are different but it has the same appeal. This story is like a fever dream you might have after reading Sense and Sensibility, I loved it. The book and narration is perfection!

In the Grand tradition of Clockwork Orange

Packed with zingers, black humor, and the embodiment of the horror of humanity. Very satisfying. I enjoyed it quite a bit.

This was good.

Wow.. this was one of the most emotionless MCs I've ever encountered. Having the story told from her POV.. everything about this story was calculated. How she handled everything that she did with ease. She was a quick thinker and covered her tracks. I just don't understand how she pulled off her one crime. You obviously can tell she has a mental illness. The other characters have problems they avoid as well.
And then the final bloodbath!! What a rampage that was. The story does have slow moments but in the end it was all worth the read.

Pleasantly disturbing

A fun mix of Gore, mystery, surprise, and a grim peek into the mind of a psychopath. Well written and fun to listen to.

meh

Gruesome and sometimes amusing but not very original or interesting. Don't need to read more of this author.
