Editorial reviews

In the introduction to A Hunter’s Fireside Book Gene Hill sets himself up as an everyman, someone who you could trade a little bourbon whiskey back and forth with, someone "who’s a lot like you". Ray Childs, who performs this audiobook, has the voice of this person; the warm and gravelly voice of a person you could sit in a duck blind with and trade tales over cold coffee. Hill has a way of picking out the details of the joys of a hunter who might more aptly be called a naturalist or outdoorsman. If you find yourself, like Hill, working too much and yearn for a campfire and a good talk about the outdoors and the simple pleasures of a fine shotgun you’ll have a good friend in this audiobook.

A Hunter's Fireside Book

Would you consider the audio edition of A Hunter's Fireside Book to be better than the print version?

This is one of Hills best! The audio version is nice to have for listning to while relaxing in the dark of a hunting camp. Just before drifting off to sleep.

What other book might you compare A Hunter's Fireside Book to and why?

Mostly Tail Feathers, Another wonderful collection of Gene Hill's storys. I don't think you can find an audio of this one. However, I highly recommend this book.

Which character – as performed by Ray Childs – was your favorite?

Hill the Trap shooter. I can easily relate to his trap shooting yarns.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No, I enjoy listning to a few storys over several eavenings , with a double scotch.

Any additional comments?

Hill always makes me want to be in the field bird hunting with my brittany..Gracie.

a good listen

I bought the book 30 years ago. it is nice to be able to listen to it again. The voice I heard in my head is basically the voice of the reader.

If you hunt, if you shoot, if you are a real man who likes the outdoors ...this book is a must.

Beyond acquiring meat, this is why we go afield

Gene Hill is a master in delivering on the passion that is behind every sunrise, hooked fish on the run, decoying migratory birds, whitetails sneaking through woodlots, elk bugles echoing over canyons, and the hair-raising feeling of treading on the same ground as dangerous game. His stories grip your soul making you broadly smile one moment while choking up the next. If you can't explain why you hunt and fish, and perhaps it's because you just do, or maybe it's because of the emotions that Gene Hill tugs at so well.
