About this listen
Rainey Paxton was born addicted to heroin.
In the fragile first hours of Rainey’s life, hospital doctors and nurses fight to keep her alive. Several months later, she is released into her parents' custody, where she is forced to live on neglect and tainted breast milk. Constrained in her home infested with drug addicts and drifters, Rainey’s drug-addicted parents leave little hope for her protection.
While Rainey is still an infant, her aunt Sophie visits her and finds the baby dirty and hungry. A bond forms between the two until tragedy strikes. Rainey is alone again until her sister Ivy is born, and the child breathes new life into Rainey’s small, isolated world.
But her parents have another plan, and with no one there to intervene on Rainey’s behalf, she must make sacrifices to feed her parents’ cravings and to keep her sister safe.
Follow Rainey’s journey from a house crawling with junkies to the violent confines of a juvenile detention center, where she finds friendship and learns fearlessness from the most unexpected people.

When Jade Kelly met her new foster mother, she thought her prayers had been answered. Kindly Carol Docherty was everything her violent, drug-addicted mother was not. Loving and nurturing, she fed and clothed 10-year-old Jade and offered a life free of fear from near constant abuse. Or so Jade thought. As soon as social workers in Lancashire stopped their regular checks on Jade’s progress, Carol turned. Over the next six years Jade and three other girls were effectively kept prisoner in a bedroom she called the ‘bad room’ and subjected to unrelenting physical and mental abuse.

Written in first person, this novel is not a memoir, but more a psychological thriller based on true events; chronicling one woman's attempt to claw her way out of the darkness of Child Sexual Abuse, while struggling to find normal, in a not-so-normal world. It is poignant, dark and graphic; not for the faint of heart.

Story
Gerri was only a young girl when she was first abused by her father. After her mother found out, and believing there was nothing she could do to help her child, nor deal with the stigma attached to it in their small Northern Irish town in the 1960s, she committed suicide. Gerri and her siblings were split up and placed in different foster homes, all knowing they were unlikely to see each other ever again. Told that her mother had committed a grave sin, Gerri was completely alone and abandoned as she confronted even more horrors from her past.

Story
For years, Eddie Lee Sexton ruled his large family like Charles Manson. The depraved patriarch dominated his ragged brood of twelve children mentally, physically, and sexually, and enforced every cruelty imaginable, from vicious beatings to raping his daughters and fathering their children. Finally, in 1992, Sexton's eighteen-year-old daughter Machelle, seeking refuge in a women's shelter, revealed the shocking, sordid details of her father's abuse to authorities. As the law attempted to catch up to Eddie Lee Sexton, he moved his family to a mobile home in western Florida.

Story
Our prisons and mental hospitals are filled with tragic stories like Tuesday Storm's. Her early childhood was riddled with torturous "games" and violent physical attacks. She was isolated from the rest of her family, locked in an attic with nothing but a bare bed and a bucket for a toilet, and fed just enough to be kept alive. The experts say it's next to impossible to find the soul's light in a dark past like Tuesday's.

Disturbingly good.
While book was filled with disturbing events you can't help root for Rainy. It was a lot at times to read as a mom your instincts are to protect your children and that's what you want to do for Rainy. This is a heartbreaking and heart griping series.

at what point do we call CPS?!?
This isn't a happy "everything works out in the end" book, so don't go into it wanting that roller coster of emotions.. this pretty much stays down in the gutter. It's dark, and vile. Please check your trigger warnings!
All in all this book is about survival and not letting the ugliness of the world make you bitter! Can't wait to see what Rayni**(idk how it's spelled in the book) does in book 2!

Frighteningly true
It’s said that this is a nightmare story that many girls live. It’s so sad and tragic sprinkled with bits of personal victories for Miss Rainy Paxton. I found my own voice through her story however not as tragic as she lived. Excellent book…. The Author really can grab the readers from the very beginning.

LOVED IT!
TWs: neonatal drug abuse, descriptive IV drug abuse, withdrawal from heroin in infancy, domestic violence, child abuse, child sexual abuse, extreme neglect, terminal illness, homicide, prostitution, coarse language
POV : 3rd person
I have seen so many conflicting reviews on this book—this series. People either love it or think it’s overly dramatic and not enough time is spent developing Rainey’s character. They say the author spends too much time hopping from one horror in her life to the next.
I get personal in my reviews because most of the books I read evoke a strong emotional reaction in me. I feel like we don’t get to know Rainey on a deeper level because when you live that kind of life (in whatever capacity) you spend more of your life surviving moment to moment and not developing a deep awareness of self or a soothing self-care ritual..
Survival is all Rainey Paxton has known: from the first breaths of life until the end of the book, all she can do is survive the utterly craptastic circumstances she finds herself in. There are very rarely happy endings in stories like this.

incredible writing, inspiring journey through hell
I could not quit listening to this book, Rainy's journey through life from birth to her teenage years. Her pain, her fears, her strength, and her resilience, holding onto what little hope she could. Her character and persistent fight to survive and hold onto the ones she loves in memory and in life is the amazing message for others that have to face such abuse throughout life. My own experiences and hearing this authors stories helps me to understand and work with children that have face their own hell in their short live. It isa difficult subject to hear or read, but it is happening all over, all around us and these children need as much understanding and love as they can get. Paige Dearth has been one of my favorite authors since I read her first book and listening to them now has been great because I have not had as much time to sit and actually read. The narrator did an incredible job reading as well. Helped to immerse the readers into little Rainy Paxton's life. I've already begun the second book of this series.
