About this listen
If I were dead, I wouldn't be able to see. If I were dead, I wouldn't be able to feel. If I were dead, he'd never raise his hand to me again. If I were dead, his words wouldn't cut as deep as they do. If I were dead, I'd be beautiful and I wouldn't be so...ugly.
I'm not dead...but I wish I was.

I kept smiling when I caught my fiancé coming down my sister’s chimney on Christmas Eve. I gave polite congratulations when they got engaged. And I even offered to help decorate for their Christmas wedding despite the fact that was supposed to be my dream wedding. But when my sister cuts up my great-grandmother’s one-hundred-year-old wedding dress and turns it into a skank show, even though that was the dress I was going to wear on my wedding day? Story
My Prison without Bars is a courageous and harrowing journey through the catacombs of hell, from the mind and voice of a little girl, living with her own monster underneath her bed. Written in first person, this novel is not a memoir, but more a psychological thriller based on true events; chronicling one woman's attempt to claw her way out of the darkness of Child Sexual Abuse, while struggling to find normal, in a not-so-normal world. It is poignant, dark and graphic; not for the faint of heart.

Story
Sam Hill always saw the world through different eyes. Born with red pupils, he was called “Devil Boy” or Sam “Hell” by his classmates; “God’s will” is what his mother called his ocular albinism. Her words were of little comfort, but Sam persevered. Sam believed it was God who sent Ernie Cantwell, the only African American kid in his class, to be the friend he so desperately needed. And that it was God’s idea for Mickie Kennedy to storm into Our Lady of Mercy like a tornado, uprooting every rule Sam had been taught about boys and girls. Forty years later, Sam, a small-town eye doctor, is no longer certain anything was by design.

Samson and Beyah have nothing in common on the surface. She comes from a life of poverty and neglect; he comes from a family of wealth and privilege. But one thing they do have in common is that they're both drawn to sad things. Which means they're drawn to each other. Beyah and Samson agree to stay in the shallow end of a summer fling. What Beyah doesn't realize is that a rip current is coming, and it's about to drag her heart out to sea.

Charlotte Davis is in pieces. At 17 she's already lost more than most people do in a lifetime. But she's learned how to forget. The broken glass washes away the sorrow until there is nothing but calm. You don't have to think about your father and the river. Your best friend, who is gone forever. Or your mother, who has nothing left to give you. Every new scar hardens Charlie's heart just a little more, yet it still hurts so much. It hurts enough to not care anymore, which is sometimes what has to happen before you can find your way back from the edge.

Read the book first, then had to get the audible v
I really enjoyed this book when I first read it, But I loved it when I was able to listen to it. I couldn't stop listening the narrator was amazing. I would recommend this book to anyone. The struggle that this poor girl went through made the second have of the book so worth it. at times it was really hard to read because the abuse that she went through was so sad. I think anyone who has faced abuse should read this book because it really ties into the intense feeling abuse victims get. This book shows that there can be light at the end of the tunnel

Incredible!! Must Read!
I cannot speak highly enough of this raw, emotional and inspiring piece of art. It spoke to me deeper than any memoir I have ever listened to, and I have listened to many. I was drawn to this book having experienced the devil of domestic violence in my own life. Although my experience was different than this incredible woman’s journey, it taught me so much! And even more important than that, is was a source of deep and genuine inspiration. For that, I thank you. Aside from the emotional impact of the book, it was flawless written. I completed it in less than 2 days and could not stop listening. Her words had the power to make you feel as if you know her yourself or were there to experience what she went through. Her strength and courage to share her story undoubtedly will help you spread the ripple effect of awareness and change if you listen to this book.

Great Read
Ugly was a great read by Margaret McHeyzer. Lily has been abused, hurt and abandoned. Her abuse started with her father and ended with her husband. The topic of abuse is a very heavy topic that I believe the author did a good job of handling tastefully. I really enjoyed reading this book and can't wait to read more by the author.

wholly cow! its a great book!
I dont even know where to start with this book.
It jumps right in, so hold on to your seats. I cant believe how good this book is. I haven't heard a book this good for a long time, and I listen to about 3 books a week.
I am in love with Lilly, so many times I just wanted to give her hug. She is so strong, and what she has gone through.. I am speechless.
This is my first time listening to anything from Margaret McHeyzer. if all her books are this good, I just found my favorite writer. I have already added more of her books to my wish list.
Becca did an amazing job, and I would happily listen to her again.
I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

No words
One of the most heartbreaking, ugly cry, triumphantly riveting books. It was hard to listen to in parts, but well worth it. Margaret McHeyzer, this was my first book of yours. I was drawn in and then completely devastated listening to this book. But the comeback was exceptional. Please read or listen.

intense
This is a story about a girl that spends the first 25 years of her life involved in all forms of domestic violence. I was devastated for her during the entire first half of the story. It's a tale about overcoming every bad thing that comes at you, and coming out even stronger and better than before. A story of redemption that is worth reading and worthy of being shared. It's unbelievable that that these type of situations actually exist. So much heartache, but also, so much happy ending. A totally epic read.

I loved this book
Thank you for telling this story... as I was reading and listening to it, all I could think was that every 16 year old girl should listen or read it before they start dating... I want them to understand and recognize the signs so that if they ever find themselves in a situation like this, they will quickly recognize the danger and get away and ask for help. Thank you again for telling this story!!!

5 Star ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Very Intense story. its hard to read. The abuse both physical and verbal are over the top... The story is very well played out. The abuse starts out at a very young age, and continues thru her young adulthood. You understand that she is conditioned to accept this abuse as a way of life. She knows nothing else.
The story continues showing how she escapes her abuse and overcomes the horrors she survived. Very interesting and held my attention.
Excellent narrator and author.
