About this listen

Named by the New York Times as one of the ten best romances of 2023.

Somewhere foggy, 1837...

Poppy had always loved the night, so it wasn't too much of a bother to wake one evening in an unfamiliar home far from London, weak and confused and plagued with a terrible thirst for blood, to learn that she could no longer step out into the day. And while vampirism presented several disadvantages, it more than made up for those in its benefits: immortality, a body that could run at speed for hours without tiring, the thrill of becoming a predator, the thing that pulls rabbits from bushes and tears through their fur and flesh with the sharp point of a white fang.

And, of course, Roisin. The mysterious woman who has lived for centuries, who held Poppy through her painful transformation, and who, for some reason, is now teaching her how to adjust to her new, endless life. A tight, lonely, buttoned-up woman, with kindness and care pressed up behind her teeth. The time they spend together is as transformative to Poppy as the changes in her body, and soon, she finds herself hopelessly, overwhelmingly attached. But Roisin has secrets of her own, and can't make any promises; not when vengeance must be served.

Soon, their little world explodes. Together and apart, they encounter scores of vampires, shifty pirates, conniving opera singers, ancient nobles, glamorous French women, and a found family that throws a very particular sort of party. But overhead, a threat looms—one woman who is capable of destroying everything Poppy and Roisin hold dear.

Samara Breger's A Long Time Dead is a lush, Victorian romance, drenched in blood and drama, about the lengths two women will go to secure a love that cannot die.

This was a great book. The story and characters were consistent and enjoyable. The plot was not one that I have read 100 times in other books.

The great story

This is an incredible story. It’s funny, emotionally compelling, sexy, sweet, thrilling, gruesome, and captivating. If this ever gets made into a TV series or movie, you’ll find me GLUED to the screen. The descriptions are so vivid that I feel like I’ve watched it already. This story is also very authentically sapphic. A slow burn for the ages. I’ll be revisiting this book over and over. Instant classic!!

Not just another romance novel

Wonderfully written characters with a story that stimulates the imagination. I thought it might drag since the length was long, but the story flows well. Narrator was excellent.

What a romance! I loved Poppy and Roisin's story. The time they spent together and the longing was palpable. I loved the audio performance as well. Great accents.

Had everything I was hoping for. Sapphic romance, fantasy, suspense, vivid world and characters. Excellent read.

Perfect

If I find a book about sapphic vampires, I will most likely read it, even if it turns out not to be perfect. With this book, we are very near to perfection.

I loved the way this book was written. It is almost poetic at times. The love between the main ladies is eternal, beautiful, and at times, painful. This book has more substance than most queer romances, and I was genuinely sad when the story ended, because I think I could spend another century with Poppy and her chosen family. All the characters are fully developed people with back-stories, and I feel like every word in this book had a purpose. The story was both light and heavy, with the right amount of steamy moments.

I'm yet to see if the author of this book has written anything else, but if they have, I'll certainly read everything.

Beautifully written romance

This story was good. The beginning had an amazing world painted for the reader and builds the MCs character. Part 2 was kinda slow. The next parts of the story picked up and was great. This story covers about a 30 year time frame. It has a bit of spice and a HEA.

Takes forever to get started. Characters rehash the same thing over and over and over again!
