About this listen

Jessie lived with her family on their homestead and had helped the family build a successful farm raising crops and animals. Her greatest joy and passion was for training her young mare and galloping across the plains. To her shock and dismay, her family agrees to an arranged marriage with a wealthy family who traveled from back East to do business in their town.

Neither Jessie, nor her intended husband, want this union; but as she considers the situation they are both in, she realizes that their circumstances could be worse. James is being forced to marry or be disowned from the family business and all the wealth that comes from his name. He also knows that if he intends to be happy as a married man, he has to win her over and does his best to make her more comfortable with her new path in life.

They go through with the lavish celebration that is more for their families than for the couple, and soon they are bound in matrimony to try and make a life together while leading the family business in the remote prairie town.

My ONLY Complaint Is I Want It To Be Longer

Since this book was narrated by one of my favorite performers *I agreed in an instant to listen to it in exchange for my review. When I hit the play button I looked at the length of the book and thought there must be some sort of error, it was only a bit over an hour.

Shorter books tend to frustrate me because they just get started and it is the end. However, the author was able to pack in a lot of material without it being too wordy he and/or busy.

I can't really review the book any further than the publisher summary allows as it would spoil. My only critique would be in some of the word choices used by the author, one example is the word 'slut'. Perhaps it was well used back in those days, but in most of the historical romances the term or word would be 'loose woman' or 'hussy.' I don't know. But if that's all I can criticize then I feel I'm being a bit nit picky.

This will be a wonderful beginning or addition to a series or collection as the title implies to me.

Meghan Kelly, 'performer extraordinaire.' I feel repetitious each time I have the privilege of writing about her performance. Dawn, another audio listener and I agree, that if Meghan Kelly narrates it, we are going to listen to it. She only chooses the best books to narrate! As always, 5 *SHOUTING* stars!

Notes: This starts out to be a purely innocent story, however the wedding night is quite descriptive, so if you are adverse to that, you have been warned.

Stars: Overall 4, Performance 5, Story 4 Stars

Please consider "following me" here on Audible.com. I purchased a lot of books by authors that I am faithful to. I also have the opportunity to review books in all genres, many that I would not pick up on my own. I have been pleasantly surprised by new authors and narrators. Thanks!

IT'S TOO SHORT!

Meghan Kelly does an excellent job of the narration, including the male voices.

The story is lovely and sweet, the only thing that would make it better is it being longer. It's like being given a glimpse into the characters lives and then being told, sorry that's it. There's so much potential, it could have been four times the length.

That said I still recommend listening too it, it's a lovely story.

Racier, 1 hour book, Mail Order Marriage

A delightful, and racier than most mail order novellas, this is a great book for adult fans of mail order marriage stories. It is short, a 1 hour audio book, so it provides a great break for binge readers doing long multi-volume series. James surprises a young farm woman with an arranged marriage proposal because her area has no prospects for her.

1 hour audiobook, so do cash not monthly book credit

Interesting

Would you try another book from Jessica Wolf and/or Meghan Kelly?

Yes I would try another book from this author if more research had been done for historical accuracy. It would make the story much more worth the money spent by the reader/ listener.

Would you ever listen to anything by Jessica Wolf again?

Yes.

Any additional comments?

This story is not a mail order bride but an arranged marriage. Not very realistic time for the wedding. More research should have been done to make this story more historically accurate. Otherwise a nice story.

Short and Spicy

Who was your favorite character and why?

Jessie was my favorite character as she had some depth to her. A bit out of the norm in her independence

What does Meghan Kelly bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

You get to know the character by how Meghan portrays her

If you could rename A Mail Order Bride Christmas, what would you call it?

Ginger Spice Cookie

Enjoyable but to short of a listen

Any additional comments?

I thought for such a short story the author fit a lot in with little or no filler, you know what is going on and do not feel lost or that something was incomplete. I do wish it had been a little longer but it was well written. Other reviews said this isn’t a mail order bride story, sure it is just the parents were writing back and forward not the bride and groom.

James want to get out from under his parents thumb, they are willing to open a new branch to their business but only if he is married. James doesn’t really want to get married but is willing to do just about anything to have a life of his own. I really liked this character he is kind and caring. He really goes out of his way to please Jessie. Jessie is so floored when she finds out she is getting married. She doesn’t want to but agrees to it. She does her best to make the most of it. She was a very enjoyable character that I really liked

Ms. Kelly does a wonderful job of narration really bring out the feelings of each character. Her character voices are very pleasant. She gives a lot of emotion to them making you feel the confusion, sorrow, pain and love each character is feeling. There were no background noises, if any breaks were taken I could not tell. I heard no repeats of words. The volume stayed the same throughout the audio. It was very easy to tell who was talking and what they were feeling. She put a lot of passion into the wedding night as well as the blooming romance. I thought her performance was really good. I am looking forward to listening to more of her work.

The author gives you a very passionate night of love as well as a wonderful story. She packs a lot into a little. I never felt like anything was missing but I would have liked it to have been longer. I enjoyed watching them get to know each other and work through their issues. There isn’t a lot one can tell about the story and not give it away so I will just say I enjoyed it and look forward to checking out more of this authors work.

Typical

I was voluntarily provided this book via audiobook boom. This book was not edited very well. It was also just 1 hour long and many parts seemed to be rushed. The story was different in that the parents made the arranged marriage and even though both of them did not want to do it. They did. Not enough meat in the story.

Jesse and James

This was an arranged marriage story. Jesse's parents placed an ad to have their daughter married. At least the groom was wealthy. It would be nice to see how the marriage worked out. Meghan Kelly did a good job with the narration. I received this free copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
