About this listen

Orin Hume from The Rose and the Thistle comes of age in A Matter of Honor and ventures beyond Scotland's borders, achieving a renown all his own, only to return home again to reclaim the life and lady he once loved.

Having grown up at Wedderburn Castle in the serene Scottish Lowlands, Orin Hume is thrust into the dazzling realm of London society and Court circles as Poet Laureate of Britain. But at the height of his fame a former tragedy and his ties to a lass he once loved lead him home to Berwickshire again.

When his return is further marred by lost love letters and scheming kin who conspire to keep the pair apart, can Lady Maryn Lockhart, now Duchess of Fordyce, forgive him? Or will the shadows of the past and the complexities of the present rewrite their love story?

Sweet story

This is a slow burn novel. It reminded me of Persuasion from Jane Austen. The hero and heroine are very likable and you want them to figure things out the whole time. It has a somewhat sad undertone but it made the story more real. I liked that the narrator’s voice did a good man’s voice as well as women’s voices. Sometimes, the voices seemed a little dreary but overall really good.

Commitment to the end

Laura Frantz is one of my favorite authors and I have enjoyed all of her books. I love the commitment Orion had for the love of his life since childhood, through tragedy and throughout his life. The only reason that I do not give the audio book more stars is because I had a great deal of difficulty understanding and hearing the narrator. Even the quality of her narrative was lacking. This made it very difficult to enjoy the story. The narrator makes a Big difference in an audio book’s quality and enjoyment.

I loved getting to hear more about Orins life.

Without giving away any details, I felt it ended very quickly. I would have liked to see what happened next. Even another chapter would have helped to sum it up a little better.
