About this listen

"A genuine whodunnit" (Kirkus Reviews) - Phillip Margolin, the master of the courtroom thriller, returns with A Matter of Life and Death, a classic mind-bending puzzle, as attorney Robin Lockwood must face her most challenging case yet, with everything stacked against her client and death on the line.

Joe Lattimore, homeless and trying desperately to provide for his young family, agrees to fight in a no-holds-barred illegal bout, only to have his opponent die. Lattimore now finds himself at the mercy of the fight's organizers who blackmail him into burglarizing a house. However, when he breaks in, he finds a murdered woman on the floor and the police have received an anonymous tip naming him the murderer.

Robin Lockwood, an increasingly prominent young attorney and former MMA fighter, agrees to take on his defense. But the case is seemingly airtight - the murdered woman's husband, Judge Anthony Carasco, has an alibi and Lattimore's fingerprints are discovered at the scene. But everything about the case is too easy, too pat, and Lockwood is convinced that her client has been framed. The only problem is that she has no way of proving it and since this is a death case, if she fails then another innocent will die.

Wow I really liked this book. I was worried it was going to be boring like book 3 was. I was not!

Very good story and characters. I really liked the twists and turns in this story. Lots of things happening and melding together.

I like Robin Lockwood's character, she gets better and better.

As for the narration, it was great I really like Therese Plummer's narrations. She does a really good job on all the voices and the men sound like men. She has a nice reading voice and reads with emotion when called for. Very good narrator.

Good book and narration!

I own most of the authors earlier works e.g. after dark, my favorite and his executive series narrated by the great Jonathan Davis. Some of his narrators are not my cup of tea so I don’t own all this work. I gave this narrator, another try as this book was on sale and she is decent but still not my favorite. I purchase by narrator not just by author. This series should be good based on this book example but it lacked the depth of authors’ earlier works so unless on sale, l would not use a full credit.
Were my comments of help?

Good legal drama from an author who experienced it

Suspence mastered story

Two unrelated side stories in the beginning that set up author’s agenda. It got way too preachy for me. The ending went on and on outside the realm of probability. I don’t recommend.

Wrapped up way too many loose ends
