Publisher's summary

An electrifying tale of psychological suspense and revenge at an elite boarding school where secrets run deep.

Now I'm in charge, the gates are my gates. The rules are my rules.

It's an incendiary moment for St Oswald's school. For the first time in its history, a headmistress is in power, the gates opening to girls.

Rebecca Buckfast has spilled blood to reach this position. Barely 40, she is just starting to reap the harvest of her ambition. As the new regime takes on the old guard, the ground shifts. And with it, the remains of a body are discovered.

But Rebecca is here to make her mark. She'll bury the past so deep it will evade even her own memory, just like she has done before. After all...

You can't keep a good woman down.

"A dark world of emotional complexity and betrayal, where twist follows twist and nothing is what it seems." (Alex Michaelides, best-selling author of The Silent Patient)

"Exhilarating. Addictive. Fierce." (Bridget Collins, best-selling author of The Binding)

"A psychological thriller you can't put down and an antiheroine you won't forget." (Harlan Coben)

Well done mystery

This was an engrossing story with excellent pacing and a storyline that, although was a little predictable, was great fun. The audible edition was extraordinarily good! The narration was lively and provided a wonderful dimension to the story.

Absolutely Brilliant

One of the most well written, smartly composed books I’ve read in an incredibly long time.
I found this story to be endlessly entertaining and very, very cleverly done.
The dual narration and dual timelines only add to the beauty of this audio experience.
Joanne Harris is an extraordinary talent.
The narration is exceptional,

Worth 3 Credits..!!!!.. Phenomenal..!!

Seldom am I moved to gush over a book ,.. but this one , quite frankly was stupendous….
However, they could have shaved off an hour of listening time if they’d dropped the dates at the start of each short chapter…. My only complaint

Optional heading

I love a suspense story that keeps me guessing throughout the book. Just when I thought I had everything figured out, a new twist sent me back to guessing again. Both narrators are excellent--so much so that I listened to the entire book in two days. Definitely worth a credit.

At least 80 pages too long

Great writing and a compelling premise, but utterly bogged down and plodding, especially towards the end. You’ll hear more about plumbing than you could ever have wanted to hear.

But wait! There's more!

I really liked this book...complex and interesting. I found out this is a third in a series, the first 2 are also great. Suggest reading them in order but this can stand alone as well, Not previously a Harris fan but I've changed my mind

Exciting Surprise!

Don't remember how I found this, but what a great surprise! Hooked me in from the beginning and kept me thinking right up to the end. Best kind of mystery -- intelligent writing, believable, if scary, scenes, twists & turns galore. And the narrators are excellent: their characters play off each other beautifully. My newest favorite author -- I've already downloaded another of her books, and my best listen of the year so far.

Worth the wait

Slow build but worth the wait. I almost gave up after the first couple of chapters but am glad I stuck it out. Great character development and made me seek out other books by the author. Great performance by the narrators.

Excellent

Joanne Harris is one of my favorite authors. This book did not disappoint. Slightly scary, slightly supernatural, suspenseful, mysterious, well developed characters, and well paced. I highly recommend.
