They call her Lady Unlucky....

With three dead fiances, Lady Eva Hyde has positively no luck when it comes to love. She sets sail for New York City, determined that nothing will deter her dream of becoming an architect, certainly not an unexpected passionate shipboard encounter with a mysterious stranger. But Eva's misfortune strikes once more when she discovers that the stranger who swept her off her feet is none other than her new employer. Or is it Lady Irresistible?

Phillip Mansfield reluctantly agrees to let the fiery Lady Eva oversee his luxury hotel project while vowing to keep their relationship strictly professional. Yet Eva is more capable - and more alluring - than Phillip first thought, and he cannot keep from drawing up a plan of his own to seduce her. When a series of onsite accidents makes it clear someone wants Lady Unlucky to earn her nickname, Phillip discovers he's willing to do anything to protect her - even if it requires a scandalous deal....

Awesome story ok narration

What can I say but it’s Joanna Shupe. I love her stories and her talent of writing. She’s awesome. This book was really good and romantic. The narrator was ok. She made Phillip sound like a young goofy boy. How much better this book would’ve been with ashford mcnab or Beverley a Crick as the narrator. I highly recommend this book as all of Joanna sharpe books

Narrator swap!!!

I immediately purchased this book because I loved the first in the series which was narrated my MJW (who is always a favorite). I was disappointed in this narrator… everyone sounded at least 50 and a tad frail which is so opposite of the strong heroine. Really loved the story. Meh on the narration.

It was ok

It was ok. The narration was a bit off. The characters didn’t really flow and mesh as well as I would have liked. And personally I don’t think any proper English Lady would have behaved as this one did at the start of the story.
I read the reviews and a lot of others liked this one .. to each their own. I did enjoy the first book in this series. I’ll look for the others.
Happy reading! :)

Disappointing narrator

The first book in the series was narrated by the remarkable Mary Jane Wells. After hearing her narration anything else falls short. This one fell even shorter. I think the story was good but it was hard to tell when the narration was so disappointing.

Phillip Mansfield & Lady Eva Hyde

▪▪▪Review contains spoilers▪▪▪

Audible Escapes review. Multiple POV. The Four Hundred Series book 2 of 3. I enjoyed the narrator but HATED the music, I'm glad it was only used at the beginning and end of the book. The author is quite clever but needs to remove her male character's need to put his hands in his pockets. I enjoyed the story but am quite surprised that the female lead was so easily lead into a sexual relationship and willingly continued it after he bought a brothel as their hookup hideout. Trigger warnings: lesbian almost forced into a heterosexual marriage or institutionalized, Phillip's ex-fiancée was trying to dupe him into marriage while pregnant with another man's child, union issues, Eva is locked inside a windowless hot office.

**uncertain of the spelling of character names**

July 1890, Phillip Mansfield is a wealthy hotelier. He suffers sea sickness, is afraid of heights, and is the middle child with 2 sisters, Meredith & Beatrix. His father died when he was 5. He was previously engaged to a woman who turned out to be pregnant and in love with another man. Now heartbroken he refuses to marry. His mother is trying to arrange a beneficial marriage for him to no avail. The woman she's chosen, Becca, is only his friend and discloses her attraction for women. They agree to see each other as friends as long as possible. Unfortunately her father grows impatient and Phillip is forced to tell him he will not marry Becca. He helps Becca & her girlfriend escape. Her father feels Phillip slighted Becca so he retaliates by disrupting the construction of his hotel with the union. Lady Eva Margaret Hyde (22, aka Evalyn) is an aspiring architect with a well known architect father, EM Hyde. While his diagnosis was never given, it seems he had Alzheimer's. She's been engaged 3 times, all 3 fiancé's have died and she's been dubbed unlucky because of them. She was interested in architecture as an 11 year old when she started following her father around and he started teaching her his trade 8 years ago when she was 14. Phillip wants to use EM Hyde as his architect and hires him with exacting specifications without ever meeting him. Eva is forced to take the job offered by Philip because her father's health is failing and they are quickly running out of money. Sadly she unwisely lies and does the plans in her father's name. She secretly takes the job as his mother's architect as well. They agree to a sexual relationship because neither of them intend to marry. When her secrets come out he feels betrayed. His mother convinces him to forgive her and move on.

Epilogue: 2 years and 4 months later, they're married, her father passed away 6 months ago while living with them, they have a new son named Edward, and are attending the Grand Opening of the completed hotel. JP
