About this listen

NATIONAL BESTSELLER • In this captivating atmospheric novel from the New York Times bestselling author of The Unmaking of June Farrow, a woman investigates her twin brother’s mysterious death while confronting the ghosts of her own haunted past.

James and Johnny Golden were once inseparable. For as long as she can remember, James shared an almost supernatural connection with her twin brother, Johnny, that went beyond intuition—she could feel what he was feeling. So, when Johnny is killed in a tragic accident, James knows before her phone even rings that her brother is gone and that she’s alone—truly alone—for the first time in her life.

When James arrives in the secluded town of Six Rivers, California, to settle her brother’s affairs, she’s forced to revisit the ominous events of their shared past and finally face Micah, the only other person who knows their secrets—and the only man she has ever loved.

But as James delves deeper into Johnny’s world, she realizes that their unique connection hasn’t completely vanished. The more she immerses herself in his life, the more questions she has about the brother she thought she knew. Johnny was hiding something, and he’s not the only one. The deeper she digs, the more she is compelled to unravel the truth behind the days leading up to Johnny’s death. Ultimately, James must decide which truths should come to light, and which are better left buried forever.

Atmospheric and emotional

This was a cozy little mystery that I thoroughly enjoyed. Pacing was a tad slower than desired but it was still such a good book and didn’t have any impact on my enjoyment. The story was so good and well written. The way scenery and emotions are described, you can almost feel it like you’re there. But that’s to be expected if you love Adrienne Young. The narrator is probably one of my favorite I’ve listened to in a while as well.

A Peek Into a Lovely World Full of Secrets

While this story took a bit for me to latch onto, I let myself get pulled into the lives of Johnny and James (not sure of the spelling as I just listened :)

The way that Adrienne pulls you into the world by painting elaborate pictures with her words is such a beautiful gift! She is a remarkable author in that way.

It is hard to put this book down. The slow current to start the story becomes a rushing water that you have no choice but to be carried along it currents with storytelling like no other!

Adrienne so effortlessly invites you to unfold the secrets of this gorgeous but quaint town that holds so many secrets you have no choice but to be drawn to the light at the end of a tragic tunnel James is so eager to find.

Go into this story with an open heart and mind. You will be rewarded!

Atmospheric and mysterious

Adrienne young knows how to write a setting so vivid and atmospheric, you never forget it. This wasn’t my absolute favorite plot of hers but still a beautiful story, with lots of mystery unraveling!
