“Julia Whelan skillfully narrates Sabine's story of bloodlust and decay…Katie Leung's soft Scottish accent suits the grieving Alice…Lottie is portrayed by Marisa Calin, whose crisp English accent reminds listeners of Lottie's high-society past.”AudioFile

This program is read by a full cast, including Grammy-winning narrator Julia Whelan, who has narrated over 600 audiobooks and is a multiple Audie and SOVAS Award winner; Marisa Calin, an Audie, Odyssey, and AudioFile Earphones Award winner; and Katie Leung, best known for her role as Cho Chang in Harry Potter.

From V. E. Schwab, the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue: a new genre-defying novel about immortality and hunger.

This is a story about hunger.

1532. Santo Domingo de la Calzada.

A young girl grows up wild and wily—her beauty is only outmatched by her dreams of escape. But María knows she can only ever be a prize, or a pawn, in the games played by men. When an alluring stranger offers an alternate path, María makes a desperate choice. She vows to have no regrets.

This is a story about love.

1827. London.

A young woman lives an idyllic but cloistered life on her family’s estate, until a moment of forbidden intimacy sees her shipped off to London. Charlotte’s tender heart and seemingly impossible wishes are swept away by an invitation from a beautiful widow—but the price of freedom is higher than she could have imagined.

This is a story about rage.

2019. Boston.

College was supposed to be her chance to be someone new. That’s why Alice moved halfway across the world, leaving her old life behind. But after an out-of-character one-night stand leaves her questioning her past, her present, and her future, Alice throws herself into the hunt for answers . . . and revenge.

This is a story about life—how it ends, and how it starts.

Critic reviews

"Bury Our Bones in the Midnight Soil crosses centuries, continents, and cultures to tell the story of three women…. whose afterlives are not what they expected. Vampire fiction the way it should be done, and a compellingly dark companion to the more life-affirming Addie LaRue."—Paste Magazine

"Schwab delicately intertwines the three storylines, which are compelling individually even before the reader knows how they will connect…..A beautiful meditation on queer identity against a supernatural backdrop."—Kirkus Reviews (starred)

"Schwab's fantasies are always a big draw, and this enticing tale of lesbian vampires that crosses centuries [is] irresistible."—Booklist

Editorial Review

He’s a mobster. She’s his obsession
I didn’t think I’d fall this hard for Nic and Lo, but Caught Up pulled me in fast and didn’t let go. The story follows Lauren, a cam girl who’s built her life on her own terms, and Nico, the mobster who never really let her go even after betraying her years ago. What starts as an unwelcome reunion slowly unravels into something darker, deeper, and unexpectedly tender. The performances by Kasi Hollowell, Jason June, and Teddy Hamilton were SO steamy, making it impossible to stop listening. I wasn’t ready for how much I’d care about these characters. —Patty R., Audible Editor

Gritty, gorgeous, and emotionally devastating. Schwab’s prose is hypnotic. Every sentence hums with sensuality and danger. The characters feel achingly real, even when they disappoint. While the lack of redemption may frustrate some readers, the emotional complexity is unmatched. A lush, lust-filled vampire tale that lingers like smoke in your lungs.

Hot vampires. Cold betrayals. No redemption.

I really enjoyed the voice actors! The story was very detailed and extremely intriguing. The different takes and characters were perfectly expressed. I loved the story line. I do get annoyed at the vampire/love scenes but that’s just me - I don’t like romance novel bs - but this one made sense. It was just like yup. That’s how centuries of lies happens bc “promises and love ” lol. Honestly very great listen.

Fun and intricate

I went into this book not really knowing what to expect — and that was part of the magic. Schwab takes us across centuries, from 16th-century Spain to 19th-century London to modern-day Boston, weaving the stories of María, Charlotte, and Alice in a way that feels seamless and haunting.

While I didn’t connect with this one as deeply as I did with The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue, I still really loved it. Part of that disconnect is just personal — the romantic relationships are between women, and that’s not something I personally relate to — but they’re written with so much care and complexity that I was still pulled along.

Schwab’s signature style shines here: beautiful prose, layered characters, and a mix of history, horror, and the supernatural that just works. It’s dark, thoughtful, and lingers with you long after the last page.

Keep them coming please V.E. Schwab

One of my favorite things about reading V.E Schwabs stories is the way her words unravel a tale that has already ended and you are just there to experience it. To listen and to understand. Most of her endings are never good nor bad. There is no happily ever after, just the truth. A decision made. A period at the end of a sentence, and it is so satisfying!! I always feel so content after finishing her books. like releasing a breath I didn't know I was holding. This story is no different.

V.E Schwab has done it again!!!

Well told. Great narration! Long wait for a “hero/heroine” in the saga. Could be a movie.

I went into this story blind. I have to admit, I probably wouldn't have picked it up if I knew it was about vampires. I only heard raves about this book on booktok and Insta. I don't regret it, however, I did find myself confused at times, but sticking to it, it all came together in the end. I did need a couple breaks for a day or so to read something else. but only took me about a week. I'm glad I finished it. I enjoyed the story. Lovers to enemies... mortals to vampires. Heartbreak from intense love.
