About this listen

From the authors of the best-selling series CHERRINGHAM

Sussex, England, 1929. Mydworth is a sleepy English market town just 50 miles from London. But things are about to liven up there, when young and handsome Sir Harry Mortimer returns home from his diplomatic posting in Cairo, with his beautiful and unconventional American wife, Kat.

No sooner have the two arrived, when a jewel robbery occurs at Harry's aunt's home - Mydworth Manor. The police are baffled and overwhelmed with the case. But Harry and Kat have an edge in the hunt for the dangerous culprit: not only do they have certain useful "skills" they've both picked up in service of King, President and Country, they also have access to parts of English society that your average bobby can't reach ...

Nathaniel Parker, born in 1962, graduated from the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art and went on to join the Royal Shakespeare Company. His television career began in 1988 when he played Flying Officer 'Flash' Gordon in the LWT mini-series "Piece of Cake". He is also the lead in the BBC series "The Inspector Lynley Mysteries", based on the novels by Elizabeth George. Nathaniel Parker has an extensive list of audio books to his credit, ranging from the classics of Charles Dickens and Thomas Hardy to more modern writings and children's books.

Just okay for me..

First of all, the narrator CANNOT do a female voice, much less an American one. So, I’m not sure I want to listen to anymore of this series. I’ve listened to 30 of the Cherringham novellas and there’s no comparison, in the story or the narration. It’s hard to believe it’s the same authors.

This was about a robbery and murder involving English Aristocracy, and Lord and Lady Mortimer who solved it.

No romance and no swearing.

As to the narration: I might add that Nathaniel Parker did do the men’s voices very well, giving every man his own voice and his emotions were good too, but not his women’s voices. Every woman in the story sounded just like a man.

the puzzle part of the mystery was engaging without being overshadowed by a bunch of violence and skin.

Off to a great start

I really enjoyed this first entry. The story was really enjoyable and the narration kept me listening. I’m not sure why it got some poor reviews. Yes, it is different from the Cherringham series and it is an historical mystery, but in this case, different is really good. It is a great start to a new series.

Fun who done it

Had and enjoyable time listening to this mystery. The narrator was great; articulate and enunciated well; wherein you did not miss a bit of the story or question as to which character was speaking.

Needs two narrators

This would have been a good story to feature two narrators - Nathaniel Parker on the men and a female voice actor for Cat and the other women. I was entertained by the story. I found the Cat- POV sections a little distracting as they were being read.

Incredible narration, good story

Not a very puzzling mystery. However the characters are fun. The narrator is great. You might think it is a cast instead of a single narrator.

Predictable

Too predictable for my taste. Started out interesting but slowed too much! This could have been interesting!

backstory

The only thing that seems to be missing is more of a backstory on our protagonists but... That being said they are delightful and kind of remind me of Nick and Nora
